Katherine Baicker, a leading scholar in the economic analysis of health care policy, commenced as Dean and the Emmett Dedmon Professor at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy on August 15, 2017. Fundraising at the University of Chicago: Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) The University of Chicago boasts an endowment of $7.8 billion and raises $500 million annually from the University's 160,000 alumni. The University of Chicago Inquiry and Impact Campaign was launched in 2014 with a fundraising goal of $4.5 billion. In March 2017, that goal was expanded to $5 billion. The campaign is the most ambitious and comprehensive in the University's history. Campaign priorities cover every division, school, department, and institute across the University. Along with its fundraising goal, the campaign has an equally ambitious goal of engaging alumni through intellectual, professional, and social activities on campus, around the world, and online. To date, $4.1 billion has been raised and more than 115,100 alumni have connected with the University through volunteering, giving, attending events, and online interactions. UChicago's Office of Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) is led by Sharon Marine, who was named Vice President in August, 2017. With more than 25 years of experience in higher education advancement, Marine previously served at Cornell University, Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Job Information

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Dean of Harris Public Policy and as a member of Harris' senior leadership team, the Associate Dean of Alumni Relations and Development will oversee the strategy, planning, organization, and implementation of programs designed to support initiatives throughout Harris Public Policy.

As the leader of the Alumni Relations and Development team at Harris, the Associate Dean will develop an overall giving structure that will support major gifts, annual fund, leadership giving, and corporate/foundation giving strategies with a particular focus on goals for Harris priorities within the University of Chicago Campaign (http://campaign.uchicago.edu/priorities/harris-school): Inquiry and Impact including its new home, the Keller Center to be occupied in January 2019. In addition, the Associate Dean will work closely with University Alumni Relations and Development colleagues to ensure timely communication and coordination with broader University fundraising efforts.



Responsibilities



Lead evaluation and solicitation of major gifts:
  • Solicit gifts at all levels as part of the University's campaign effort and to meet individual fundraising goals
  • Develop and sustain strong partnerships with the Directors of Harris affiliated Centers to identify ongoing strategies to ensure appropriate prospect identification and processes for ongoing support of each Center's activities
  • Oversee the Dean's development-related travel schedule
  • Create and implement long term stewardship plans for key constituents utilizing input from many sources
  • Work closely with the Dean, members of the Senior Leadership team, and Central ARD to create strategies for engaging key relationships


Provide overall strategic leadership for alumni relations and development team:
  • Oversee and grow a team of alumni relations and development staff
  • Maintain relationships with donors and stakeholders at the University level and beyond
  • Develop new strategies for identifying and engaging new stakeholders in the Harris mission
  • Provide oversight and engagement strategies for Harris' two leadership councils: The Harris Council and the Harris Alumni Council
  • Execute new initiatives to demonstrate the impact of philanthropy
  • Develop and manage the budget for the team's initiatives, including tactics and nuances of gift accounting
  • Become a trusted resource to Faculty and Harris Centers with insight into and involvement in fundraising activities


Manage and oversee all alumni relation activities:
  • Lead the Alumni Relations team in the Engagement Campaign goals to reach 2800 + uniquely engaged alumni by the end of the capital campaign (ending December 2019)
  • Manage strategies to identify new and hard to reach alumni through new initiatives and platforms including:
  • Direct engagement efforts aimed at building a robust Harris alumni community
  • Engage alumni, staff, faculty, and current students in outreach tactics
  • Strategize on opportunities for cross-constituent programming
  • Administer marketing and communications strategies to celebrate and recognize alumni for their achievements


Competencies:
  • Proven track record of accomplishment in solicitations and cultivation of prospective donors, or sales and client development required.
  • Demonstrated success in building relationships with high capacity prospects and donors.
  • Ability to identify stakeholders and build strong collaborative relationships with them across departments and units of a large, multi-faceted University.
  • Passion for the education and research mission of a world-class university, particularly in improving the life prospects of disadvantaged individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to express with clarity, passion and persuasion the mission and programs of the University of Chicago.
  • Intelligence, sophistication and confidence necessary to work with high caliber researchers and scholars.

Additional Requirements

Education and Experience:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.


Experience:
  • A minimum of one year of experience developing and monitoring budgets required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working closely and collaboratively with senior leadership, trustees and board members required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience leading a project team or managing staff required.
  • A minimum five years of professional work experience in fundraising, development, alumni relations, donor relations, nonprofit management, research, marketing, communications, sales or similar professional work experience required.


Technical Skills:
  • Familiarity with development database software.
