The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools provide one of the world's most outstanding pre-collegiate educational experiences. The High School Dean of Teaching and Learning in the High School is a new position starting in the 2018-2019 school year. The Dean is an academic administrator whose primary responsibility is collaborating with and supporting high school faculty and department chairs in the areas of program design and development, pedagogy, and professional growth within and across disciplines.
- The Dean of Teaching and Learning will work with high school teachers to invigorate their curriculum with the latest educational practices, to innovate and collaborate, and to create new synergies. Areas of focus will include: identifying inquiry-based, interdisciplinary, and experiential learning opportunities; evaluating and incorporating contemporary educational research, trends, and best practices; and establishing a coherent and continuous professional development program for the high school including engaging with other schools.
- Working with teachers as they continue to pursue excellence in teaching, the Dean will develop the means for teachers to take active leadership roles in implementing new ideas and cultivating partnerships within the University of Chicago and beyond.
- The Dean reports to the High School Principal and is a member of the high school administrative team. The Dean works closely with academic administrators and department chairs in the other schools, the Middle School in particular, to create a more holistic understanding of the students' educational experience, to coordinate scope and sequence, and to insure consistent transitions to high school.
- Working in conjunction with the Learning and Counseling Department and Coordinator of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Dean will engage with faculty on incorporating differentiated instruction and cultural competencies into their teaching.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Masters degree strongly preferred.
- Teaching experience at the middle school, high school, or collegiate level.
- A minimum of three years experience in program development and leadership.
