About the Unit
The Section of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics strives to become a Center of Excellence in developmental diagnosis, biomedical management and family support for children with motor, communicative, sensory, developmental, genetic, neurological, learning and behavior disorders. The section is a vital component of the Comer neonatal intensive care developmental follow-up programs essential for accreditation and advancing continuous quality improvement of effectiveness and safety on translational neonatal interventions. The section is also an essential resource for children who have survived PICU critical illness, cardiac interventions, and oncological management. In addition, DBP works closely with pediatric surgery, neurology, and genetics so that supports and linkage to community resources are available to complex populations including those experiencing trauma. As coordinated family-centered population health care is the transforming principle for future health financing initiatives, the section is uniquely positioned to address care coordination, management pathways, and collaboration with community providers to advance both the quality and value of efforts to improve outcomes for vulnerable child disability populations with a spectrum of developmental and behavioral disorders.

Job Information

Job Summary:

DBP is seeking an occupational therapist to deliver services to children being cared for in our clinical venues, including the Early Intervention Outreach program. This work may be done as an individual provider, or may be part of a multi-disciplinary team.


  • Working either individually or as a team member, evaluate children who are pre-school through teenage years who are in need of improving their independent functioning.
  • Recommends developmental interventions to improve sensory integration, fine motor, visual motor, adaptive skills, handwriting, and dexterity.
  • Evaluate children's capabilities, recommends and provides therapy,
  • Develops and implements individual intervention plans including recommendations for IFSPs and IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Provide direct services to support the child's individual development of skills for daily living
  • Assists the team in the development of appropriate individual goals and objectives supporting maximal therapeutic trajectories appropriate to each child's individual needs.
  • Follow treatment programs and goals for improved patient function, participation and family well-being.
  • Participate in case conferences to ensure coordinated and comprehensive plans for care of the child, and communicating these plans to the child's family.
  • Identifies and arranges for other necessary supports or accommodations required for continued developmental achievements
  • Communicates with other professional staff and the child's family support system to provide continuity of care.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with the students, parents, and other professionals required.
  • Ability to develop reports and maintain records required.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of settings required.
  • Ability to work in spacious rooms equipped with machines, tools, and other devices generating noise required.
  • Ability to stand and move around during much of the workday required.
  • Patience and strong interpersonal skills to inspire trust and respect required.
  • Ingenuity and imagination in adapting activities to individual needs required.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral are required.
  • Spanish fluency preferred.

Additional Requirements


Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy Required.

  • Minimum one year experience working with children with mental and/or physical limitations is required.
  • Experience in Early Intervention Medical Diagnostics and/or provision or therapeutic services to these children preferred.
  • Experience in providing an array of diagnostic and therapeutic services in health centers, home settings and educational programs is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Early Intervention credentialing in Illinois required.
  • Current registration by the American Occupational Association and/or State of Illinois license in occupational therapy is required.
  • Incumbent may also be required to also secure a license for providing services in Indiana
  • Meeting annual CME requirements both for OT practice and for Early Intervention is required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • In depth, up-to-date knowledge of physical/occupational therapy, theory and practice, and the legal and ethical issues associated with them are required.
  • Working knowledge of recovery models is preferred for each case.
  • Knowledge of IEPs preferred.
  • Having a working knowledge of recovery models is preferred for each case.
  • Early Intervention Medical Diagnostics services and/or provision of therapeutic services to these children is preferred.

  • Effective audio-visual discrimination and perception.
