Minimum Qualifications

Master of Science in Nursing. Experience in nursing education preferred. Ability to communicate effectively and work with administration, faculty, and students.

Purpose of Job

The student success coach provides leadership and support that complement classroom instruction and encourages academic success among students enrolled in programs within the SON.

Scope of Responsibilities

Through collaborative efforts with academic departments the student success coach facilitates student learning by: coaching creative study strategies, promoting strategies that will facilitate the acquisition and/or development of effective test-taking skills, providing course-specific test preparation, offering academic success skills workshops, and making available traditional face-to-face and online tutoring. Responsibilities also include establishing and maintaining productive and professional relationships with the Departments of Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Programs. The student success coach is committed to creating an inclusive, student-centered learning environment, which stimulates critical thinking and productive learning.

Essential Job Functions

•Manages all graduate and undergraduate retention and graduate enhancement programs and activities.
•Engages students in a variety of service activities that ensure progression towards graduation leading to career goals.
•Assists students in the attainment of academic achievement commensurate with their capabilities through effective performance in these essential functions: Liaison, Identification and Assessment, and Academic Support.
•Facilitates student-learning opportunities through flexible scheduling.
•Participates in the student orientation process.
•Develops a work plan directed towards the detection, orientation and development of activities that supports the student’s progress, especially for those with academic deficiencies.
•Compiles, selects and organizes information about needs of student body using information from the Academic Alert system, communication with faculty, staff, and students, and any additional questionnaires, interviews or instruments.
•Organizes programs that facilitate academic success (e.g., stress reduction, note taking, time management, test-taking, study skills, writing skills, etc.).
•Maintains accurate and timely data of School of Nursing activities, and prepare reports required by the Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Nursing Programs.
•Assists students with additional skills development as requested by faculty.
•Initiates development of policies and procedures appropriate to position and services.
•Provides individualized academic success plans.
•Refers students to other appropriate student services available through Alcorn State University. .
•Maintains confidential student records and adheres to FERPA guidelines at all times.
•Performs other relevant duties and responsibilities as required.

Licensing and Certifications

Candidates must be eligible for or currently licensed to practice nursing in the State of Mississippi. Selected candidates must complete the State of Mississippi Registered Nurse licensure process prior to appointment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The Student Success Coach must have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following areas: student development/engagement, experience with high-risk students from diverse backgrounds, effective study skills and learning strategies, active learning and project based pedagogy, effective communication and problem solving strategies, academic retention activities, and student academic advisement.
NOTE: This is a part-time position, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday and Thursday; 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Wednesday.
