Position Information: The Assistant Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students (AVC/DOS) reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and provides leadership, strategic direction, and accountability for the administration, development, assessment and improvement of student services and experiences in alignment with the UCR and divisional missions and strategic plans. Inspires cultivation of a meaningful student experience and enhancement of student success outcomes. The AVC/DOS oversees 11 departments including 7 Ethnic and Gender Program offices through the Assistant Dean of Students, Student Life, Residential Life, Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Programs, and the Highlander Union Building. In addition the AVC/DOS oversees 3 specialized units including Undocumented Student Programs, Guardian Scholars and Foster Youth Support Services, and Veterans Support Programs. The AVC/DOS directly supervises 8.0 FTE and indirectly supervises over 100 permanent and temporary staff and has an overall divisional operating budget of roughly $14M involving multiple funding sources.

Minimum Requirements: Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Ability and skill in managing a multi-fund budget, fundraising, and grant procurement.
Knowledge of organizational climate and multicultural issues.
Excellent problem solving skills.
Ability to conduct strategic planning and forecasting.
Astute political acumen regarding sensitive and high visibility issues.
Expert knowledge of student development theories and practice.
Knowledge of leadership theories and programs.
Demonstrated ability to set specific, measurable, realistic goals for departments and individual staff members.
Ability to identify, define, and evaluate problems, and to plan and develop appropriate long-term and immediate strategies and solutions.
Ability to develop procedures and methodology, which establish priorities to achieve desired results and objectives for multiple offices and the campus.
Ability to set priorities and assign resources to meet multiple goals and deadlines.
Skill in providing imaginative and creative solutions and being a resourceful problem-solver.
Ability to identify student populations, conduct research, and direct programs and support services aimed at diverse student constituencies.
Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, and other members of the community. Ability to involve others in the decision-making process and ability to increase staff effectiveness by fostering collaborative and supportive relations.
Ability to prepare and manage a variety of budgets, make realistic and equitable fiscal decisions, and prepare cogent budgetary and annual reports.
Demonstrated multicultural competence

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of human resources policies and practices, including classification systems, compensation issues, and selection processes.
