Position Information
The Lead Zone Mechanic leads, guides and assists with the preservation and repair of all structures, building systems, infrastructure and grounds in order to promote a safe, secure and comfortable campus environment. The Lead Zone Mechanic is responsible for, but not limited to: skilled maintenance and troubleshooting on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, painting & carpentry, etc. Responsible for responding to jobs and service requests generated through work orders, scheduled maintenance programs or by emergency call-in. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence; acts as a subject matter expert and provides leadership to custodial/housekeeping tasks to be performed. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

Minimum Requirements
Five (5) years of responsible experience performing skilled maintenance and/or troubleshooting in one or more of the trades including HVAC, carpentry, concrete, drywall, plumbing, access control and electrical work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven experience and knowledge in safely using and operating hand and power tools common to all trades; including experience working with 120V, 208V, 230V and 277V wiring and equipment.

Ability to read, write and communicate in English and perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics.

Knowledge of building codes, industrial safety standards and code procedures. Working knowledge of the safe and proper procedures when asbestos, lead paint or mold is suspected while performing any of the essential job duties.

Basic working knowledge and skill with computers with Windows operating systems.

Prior experience and ability to safely perform physically demanding work, moving materials weighing up to 70 pounds to and from pick-up trucks, carts and loading docks. Ability to work under constant turning, pulling, pushing, bending and twisting. Must be able to work in confined areas while looking or reaching straight up to repair materials on ceilings, wall and floors. Ability to work in dusty, vaporous and malodorous environments that include but are not limited to: solvents, paints, human waste and sawdust, etc. Ability to work in conditions of high heat and humidity to below freezing. Ability to work in areas with constant noise from, but not limited to, supply and exhaust fans.

Prior experience and ability to safely work from ladders and scaffolding up to 30 feet high and on roofs up to four stories high.

Time management skills with ability to prioritize daily work orders to complete assignments in a timely and accurate manner.

Prior job experience in accurately determining the cause of and correction of malfunctions in HVAC units, and the skill to use all HVAC testing equipment and tools for diagnosis and repair.

Must be able to work occasional scheduled, unscheduled and emergency call-in overtime. Must be able to work nights and weekend shifts.

Hired candidate must possess or obtain a valid CA Driver License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles; and will be maintained on the annual DMV Pull Notice. Must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI; and must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

Preferred Qualifications
Certification of training and experience in two different building trades.

Welding experience.

Certification of training as a Pool Operator and experience with commercial pool maintenance.

Knowledge of UC/UCR policies.
