Position Information
The Accounting Coordinator is responsible for providing Auxiliary Services' with accounting administrative support and coordination. Independently coordinates and maintains internal financial online systems to monitor budgetary activities. Performs follow-up to resolve problems encountered with accounts payable, reviews and reconciles to the general ledgers, audits documents for appropriateness, availability of funds for purchasing, and compliance to regulations and contractual agreements. Provides financial and administrative support to the financial Operations Manager. Interacts with various University departments and is responsible for providing excellent financial support and customer service. Performs duties with a high level of professionalism and is responsible for independent problem solving. Works within a team environment providing support to coworkers. Coordinates special projects of highly confidential and sensitive nature. Responsible for assisting with the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluating of student staff according to University policies and procedures. Trains and monitors all staff involved in accounting matters.

Minimum Requirements
Four (4) years experience in one or more of the following: coordinating, processing, reviewing and/or approving accounting, procurement, and other financial transactions; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skill and ability to understand, interpret, communicate and apply accounting, financial, purchasing, travel, etc. departmental and University policies and procedures and related internal controls; ability to ensure compliance and adhere to such polices and controls at all times.

Experience in an accounting, financial or other related business environment providing customer service and support for financial activities. Ability to respond to and meet/exceed the needs of the customer, address customer concerns, inquiries and requests, etc.

Experience and/or knowledge of automated financial systems and fund accounting principles; experience and/or knowledge of procurement practices and policies and automated purchasing systems.

Experience and/or knowledge of ledger reconciliation procedures and preparing journal entries. Experience and ability to identify account variances, independently research discrepancies, and process corrections and adjustments as necessary.

Experience organizing, prioritizing and directing workload to meet required deadlines and departmental objectives; ability to work effectively under pressure. Ability to organize tasks, documents, materials and systems with efficiency and accuracy. Skill and ability to maintain and oversee accurate record-keeping with strict attention to detail and adhere to University record-keeping and retention practices. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Skill and ability to independently research and analyze situations with ability to develop feasible solutions or actions following established policies and procedures, or practices; ability to communicate recommendations, decisions, or outcomes diplomatically. Ability to make appropriate contacts for problem resolution. Skill in using professional and sound judgement to address issues or concerns.

Exceptional communication skills, verbal and written, and ability to interact effectively with departmental staff as well as campus and outside community members. Ability to work independently, or collaboratively as part of a team, with ability to interact with tact and diplomacy at all times and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Proficient experience using Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to compose, proofread, edit and/or approve grammatically correct and accurate correspondence, summaries, notifications, etc. Ability to generate reports on a frequent basis, or ad hoc as needed. Experience using query tools to extract data and produce meaningful reports/metrics.

Hired candidate must pass a background check through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area; or college level coursework in accounting or finance.

Experience and/or knowledge of UCR policies, procedures, and internal controls governing financial, accounting, and purchasing matters.

Experience with various UCR financial systems.

Proficient understanding and working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Experience in a supervisory role with responsibility for staffing, hiring, training, disciplinary action, termination, and performance management.

Experience with automated billing and accounts payable systems and the related internal controls.

Skill in negotiation techniques used in buying.

Strong math skills with ability to compute ratios, rates and percentages.

Experience in the design and implementation of internal controls, standard operating procedures, and process improvements.
