Overview of the Position

The Associate Director is a master's-level professional who serves as a Central Staff member for the Office of Residence Life. In addition to providing guidance, direction, and support for the overall mission, vision, and goals of the residential program at Miami University, this person is responsible for oversight of the departmental initiatives related to diversity, academic, and large scale departmental initiatives. Like all members of the Office of Residence Life, the Associate Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of students by providing services and programs focusing on the learning outcomes for the Office of Residence Life. This position is a live-out position and reports to the Director of Residence Life.

Job Responsibilities

Listed below are both specific job duties of the Associate Director position as well as minimum professional standards expected of all Residence Life employees.  These responsibilities encompass student and community development initiatives, both proactive and reactive, that directly influence the success of our residential students.

Diversity and Inclusion

  • Serve as a creative resource and consultant to students, employees and partners at all levels of the department for equity, diversity and inclusion related initiatives
  • Ensure the development and delivery of training programs and opportunities that address diversity and inclusion in ways that meet the needs of employees, administrators, students and partners
  • Coordinate and plan multicultural and intercultural education activities, trainings and programs that educate and promote awareness and an understanding and appreciation of diversity and inclusion
  • Provide support to underrepresented populations to assist in their success and retention
  • Chair the departmental Cultural Competence Resource workgroup
  • Track incidents of intolerance in residential communities and coordinate communication with impacted students
  • Oversee and assign all gender inclusive housing requests
  • Serve as departmental liaison to Office of Diversity Affairs and Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity
  • Coordinate the departmental Climate Survey and other assessment efforts related to diversity and inclusion

Residential Academic Initiatives

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of the overall vision for living learning communities at Miami University
  • Proactively build partnerships with current and potential stakeholders in an effort to provide timely and engaging co-curricular options for students
  • Communicate regularly with faculty members, academic departments, and program offices to support residential academic initiatives
  • Collaborate with the Office of Housing Options, Meals and Events (HOME) to facilitate LLC assignment processes
  • Coordinate LLC classes with students, (HOME), faculty, instructors, and the Office of the Registrar
  • Assist with Orientation Registration process for first year seminar courses
  • Coordinate departmental staff responsibilities in teaching first year transition courses (UNV 101 and CEC 101)
  • Provide leadership on assessment for residential academic initiatives
  • Serve on select LLC Advisory Councils

Large Scale Initiatives

  • Collaborate with partner offices on diversity and inclusion campus events, as well as late night programming
  • Serve on Family Weekend and Homecoming advisory committee
  • Coordinate department’s programming efforts for Welcome Week and First 50 programming
  • Provide oversight of departmental processes for when vendor contracts are required for services

Overarching Staff Expectations

  • Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors
  • Practice ethical stewardship of university resources
  • Collaborate with and support live-in staff members on departmental, divisional, and institutional priorities
  • Demonstrate a consistent willingness to work with individuals from different race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and national origin backgrounds
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life
  • Interpret and enforce Miami University, policies, rules, and procedures
  • Build and maintain positive professional relationships within the department and across the university
  • Fulfill other general duties assigned by the Office of Residence Life, Division of Student Affairs and Miami University

Minimum Qualifications:  

This position required a master’s degree, preferably in higher education or a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years of full-time, post-masters experience. The individual in this position must have experiences in residence life, living learning communities, programming, diversity initiatives, long-range planning, developing and maintaining effective cross campus partnerships, as well as a proven ability to relate to a diverse population. A functional knowledge of word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet use required.
