The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (VCDEI). We seek an experienced leader, with no less than eight years of experience, to help synthesize and integrate the campus' many effective diversity and inclusion efforts into a visible, innovative strategy for enhancing diversity, equity, access, and inclusion across all aspects of the university's mission.
The Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will lead a new office staffed by three Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellor(s), with portfolios that include working closely with the Office of the Provost on faculty diversity issues (Targets of Opportunity/dual career hiring program, promotion/tenure, and faculty development), URM and Women in STEM postdoctoral programs, URM graduate student mentoring as well as working with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be the Chief Diversity Officer for the university and will establish the new Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The VCDEI will identify and pursue opportunities for education, reconciliation, restoration, and cultural transformation with regard to bias and discrimination against any group or people, including racism in all its forms. Working with campus and community groups and the Office of the Provost, the Vice Chancellor will develop and lead a comprehensive and actionable campus diversity strategy that includes attention to recruitment, training, education, research, communication, policy, and governance at campus and unit levels. The Vice Chancellor will also be responsible for The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Access (ODEA) and system diversity initiatives to ensure integration of this strategy with principled compliance with federally-mandated civil rights, anti-discrimination and equity laws.
In addition, the VCDEI serves as a core member of the Chancellor's leadership team, providing vision and advice on diversity and social justice matters, communication strategies, budgets, and crisis management. The Vice Chancellor will chair on behalf of the Chancellor the soon to be established Campus Diversity Committee. The Vice Chancellor is responsible for appropriate staffing and supervision for all strategic diversity initiatives and organizational issues related to the development of the new Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Vice Chancellor will also represent campus priorities, values, and projects to peer institutions and beyond in national and international venues dedicated to addressing higher education's role in social justice, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, reconciliation, and accessibility efforts. The Vice Chancellor will work with Public Engagement to support the many ongoing efforts to promote campus-community engagement.
Duties of this position also include a key role in the coordination of campus responses to emerging local, national, or global events that affect the experience of students, faculty and/or staff from diverse groups and populations, and stewarding relationships with extra-academic communities on which the university depends. The Vice Chancellor will work to ensure equity and fairness in partnerships with all local, state and national organizations.
In addition to working with the Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellors and the duties in their respective portfolios, the Vice Chancellor will work with Deans and college-level Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs). In cooperation with the Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellors and college-level CDOs, the Vice Chancellor sets the strategic plan for the campus climate and all aspects of diversity and inclusion. The Vice Chancellor will also work with CDOs from Springfield and Chicago and represent the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
The ideal candidate will possess (a) a track record of success coordinating and leading a broad range of diversity initiatives in a complex university environment, or, alternatively, leadership experience gained in another service-oriented role requiring coordination and strategic leadership of a diverse range of stakeholders; (b) strong leadership and administrative skills; (c) the ability to think strategically and develop a shared vision; and (d) an understanding of how to build productive relationships with administrative leaders and faculty members across multiple organizational elements and academic disciplines within a university.
Further, the candidate will have a minimum of eight years of experience at comparable institutions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree, preferably a Ph.D. or J.D., and have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching. In addition, at least eight years of experience in supporting diversity initiatives, strong leadership skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships are a needed, as is a demonstrated ability to identify, design, and implement diversity initiatives. The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of difference, privilege, and power, and must have the ability to foster constructive dialogue with different groups across campus, build trust, establish ongoing communication structures, and work in collaboration with others to ensure an inclusive environment. Professional administrative experience with an institution of higher education is required.
This is a regular, full-time, twelve-month position with a negotiable start date. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
