Psychology: Teaching Fellow
Psychology - Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a full-time Teaching Fellow position teaching Introduction to Psychology beginning August 2018. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island, Illinois is one of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.
For the past several years, most individuals hired for Teaching Fellow positions have been ABD graduate students, although there have also been Teaching Fellows who have just completed their PhD and were looking to enhance their teaching experience. Teaching Fellows may represent any specialization within psychology. We encourage applicants with demonstrated success in working with diverse populations. Teaching Fellows at Augustana participate in the same support, mentoring, and training sessions provided for recently hired tenure track faculty at the college. We hope this experience will lead to professional growth for the Fellow; it can also lead to detailed and convincing letters of recommendation concerning teaching and collegiality.
The teaching load for this position is seven sections (two or three per ten-week trimester term) of Introduction to Psychology, though most of our past fellows have taught six courses for 6/7 salary and, on occasion, asked to teach a section of Statistics or Research Methods. We typically have no more than 20-25 students in our introductory courses. The fellowship could potentially be renewed for a second year. We require no campus service (no committee responsibilities, student advising, or admissions work) from a teaching fellow, although the individual is welcome to become involved to the degree that they are interested and able. Similarly, research is not required, although Teaching Fellows often benefit from working with 1-2 students on a project and have access to laboratory equipment.
