Charles Carter Newman Endowed Chair of Natural Resources Engineering

The Agricultural Sciences Department, within the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) at Clemson University, is seeking to fill an endowed tenure-track position at the Associate Professor level in the area of Natural Resources Engineering. The Charles Carter Newman Endowed Chair of Natural Resources Engineering was established by an endowment from J. Wilson Newman and his wife Clara in honor of his father. The position calls for "an individual of outstanding accomplishment in the application of engineering principles to solving problems in the management of natural resources." The position is a 9-month appointment and located on main campus. The desired starting date is August 1, 2018. Clemson University is an R1 Land Grant university located on the shores of Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Upper Piedmont of South Carolina, USA. The 1,400-acre campus is part of the 18,000 acres of University Farms and Forests devoted to teaching and research. Clemson University is recognized as a Top 25 public university by U.S. News and World Report.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally-recognized, externally-funded research program on natural resources engineering that may include: climatology and micro-meteorology with emphasis in complex forecasting and modeling; multi-scale watershed system modeling; or pollutant transport phenomena in environmental systems. Of added interest is expertise to link with transdisciplinary groups across campus in agriculture and engineering to pursue larger funding initiatives that address grand challenges in the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus and sustainable agriculture. The person selected for this position will also be expected to develop and teach coursework that includes both senior-level and graduate offerings in soil and water resource management, meteorology, and/or climatology. The person selected for this position will work closely with on- and off-campus research and extension personnel, faculty in the College of Engineering and Science, engineering consulting firms, environmental organizations, and state/regional/national government agencies.


QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering or related engineering field with specific academic and research experience in natural resource engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of research productivity, effective classroom instruction, experience in mentoring graduate students, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated success in obtaining external funding to support an ongoing research program.
