Director of Educational Research

Job description

Founded in 2017 as a statewide Center located on the Georgia College campus, the Sandra Dunagan Deal Center for Early Language and Literacy promotes research-based practices for children from birth to age eight, as well as their families, communities, and teachers in childcare centers, pre-schools, and K-3 classrooms.  The Center partners with universities, technical college early childhood education programs, alternative educator preparation programs and other public and private stakeholders to engage the community-at-large in the important goal of improving Georgia’s literacy rate as measured by the end of third grade.  The Center is charged with conducting ongoing research and evaluation in Georgia to identify and promote effective practices to increase early language and literacy and reading on grade level by the end of third grade.

The goals of the Sandra Dunagan Deal Center for Early Language and Literacy (SDDCELL) are:

  • Improve the third-grade literacy rates of children throughout the state of Georgia.
  • Provide early learning centers, pre-schools, K-3rd grade, colleges, and universities with an effective professional development model to increase literacy rates.
  • Seek external funding in support of the Center’s mission.

The Director of Educational Research will be responsible for all of the Sandra Dunagan Deal Center for Early Language and Literacy’s research and evaluation activities focused on achieving and sustaining gains in third grade reading proficiency in a birth to 3rd grade continuum.  Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Educational Research will have a proven record of scholarship that focuses on expanding teaching and learning opportunities for infants, toddlers, or young children.   With a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, the Director of Educational Research will design and implement research and evaluation studies; will manage contracts with external researchers engaged to provide research background, case studies, or evaluation for models in development or implementation; and will eventually supervise 3-5 other research professionals.  The Director of Educational Research will seek external funding for the Center’s research

The Director of Educational Research must have the ability to set a vision and research agenda for the Center, a passion to conduct sound research and analyze data, expertise to apply a systematic approach to continuous improvement, the capacity to write compelling reports, and an ongoing enthusiasm for and commitment to the Center’s mission of improving the language and literacy skills of Georgia’s children.

Doctoral degree in educational research and measurement, research psychology, or related field with demonstrated skill, experience, and expertise in teaching and learning in early childhood or elementary school settings and a minimum of 5 years of related experience are required.  A faculty status/rank appointment at Georgia College & State University is an option depending on qualifications and experience.
