Job description



The University of South Carolina (USC) Office of Foundations seeks a President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the USC Educational Foundation and the USC Development Foundation. The USC Foundations are the chief repository for the university’s philanthropic contributions.

The University of South Carolina has five independent 501 (c) 3 entities:

  • USC Alumni Association
  • USC Business Partnership Foundation
  • USC Development Foundation (real estate and physical assets)
  • USC Educational Foundation
  • USC Research Foundation

These five entities, which have combined assets of more than $800 million in a pooled portfolio, are unique in their own missions, functions, and governing boards.  They share the common goal of The University of South Carolina advancement.  The office of University Foundations is responsible for the pooled investments of all foundations.  For more information, please see www.sc.edu/foundations.

The President and CEO reports to the Board of Directors of the USC Educational Foundation and the USC Development Foundation and is an ex officio member of all five of the foundation boards listed above.  The President and CEO is responsible for all aspects of the Educational and Development Foundations’ operations, including investment management, control of funds, real estate gifts and acquisitions, and coordination of activities of these Foundations.  The President and CEO is also responsible for coordination and interaction with the University President, Chief Operating Officer, Provost, Chief Financial Officer and other senior university administrators.  The President and CEO is expected to work closely with the USC Vice President for University Development & Alumni Relations, but is not responsible for fundraising.

The President and CEO should have a master’s degree or equivalent work experience and a strong business background with demonstrated knowledge of management, finance, and real estate.  Experience in a senior leadership position and in working with institutionally-related foundations is preferred.  Leadership and analytical skills are important as is the ability to work effectively with boards, donors, university administrators and staff.  Effective communication skills are a must. We would like for the new President and CEO to begin work within 30 days of selection, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Established in 1801, the University of South Carolina today is a multiple-campus system with its own governing board, a budget in excess of $1 billion, and a total enrollment of approximately 45,000 students.  Columbia, the state capital and geographic, economic, and cultural center of the state, has a mild climate and is within easy driving distance of the coast and mountains.
