The College of Arts + Architecture (CoA+A) at UNC Charlotte seeks an individual to develop an integrated exhibition strategy for four College galleries: Rowe Arts (Upper and Lower Galleries), Storrs Building, and in the Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City. The Director of Galleries works across all the College’s academic units (School of Architecture, Department of Art & Art History, Department of Dance, Department of Music, and Department of Theatre) in developing a robust, stimulating exhibition agenda that supports the interdisciplinary, diverse and creative work of the CoA+A. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Director of Galleries position is critical to the goal of presenting unique opportunities for education and cultural leadership through the College and University, as well as creating and maintaining professional partnerships with institutions and organizations that enhance our mission.


The successful candidate will possess curatorial skill with experience in art and design, art production processes, art installation, communications, print and non-print marketing media, and cataloging and archive processes. The Director of Galleries will have a proven ability to lead a non-collecting academic gallery in the 21st century and will demonstrate a strong interest in how arts and architecture practices cross boundaries, instigate new visions, confront and present new directions, and project alternative solutions to creative inquiry and production. The Director will be responsible for initiating, designing, producing, and reporting on education programs in CoAA Galleries – Projective Eye Gallery (Center City Building), Storrs Building Gallery, and Rowe Arts Building Galleries, by developing exhibitions, workshops, seminars/webinars, conferences, performances and other activities to advance the mission of the College and provide venues for public engagement. The theme of the galleries is to project our work, ideas, and educational methods. The College Galleries serve not only to expand public programming and outreach with local-to-international audiences but also to be a catalyst that draws the scholarly interests and networks of our faculty and students into public view. Working closely with the College’s Director of Communications & External Relations, the Director of Galleries will develop and manage a marketing and communications plan that will include exhibition and media efforts, non-traditional and social media strategies, internal communications, presentations, briefings, editorials, articles, catalogs, and other materials. The Director will serve on the College Executive Council and will collaborate with academic units, peer directors, and associate deans in establishing schedules, exhibition dates, and programming. The Director must be skilled in representing the College in meetings, conferences and other public forums and in managing sensitive issues with both internal and external constituents. Candidates should have experience in one or more of the fields of art, design, and electronic media plus marketing and communications, and proven experience as a spokesperson working with the media. A Master’s degree in art, art history, architecture, design, museum studies or related field is required. Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in writing, digital communications/technology, and public speaking.


Responsibilities include:

Curatorial, Exhibition Design, Art & Design Management

  • Lead the development and implementation of an integrated College-based program of exhibitions in four galleries that complement and provokes engagement between diverse art audiences;
  • Provide leadership in developing, managing, and sustaining strong public exhibitions and programs that contribute a unique voice in Charlotte’s cultural landscape;
  • Identify and maintain effective relationships and communication with discipline-specific organizational and institutional partners and create opportunities to promote and highlight scholarly research, exhibitions, and performances to build audience and awareness.

Galleries Operation and Management

  • Develop and maintain an annual budget and full suite of College materials in coordination with College Director of Communications & External Relations, Director of Business Affairs, Director of Computing, and unit heads;
  • Facilitate and manage extramural contracts, liability, shipping/receiving and insurance arrangements;
  • Coordinate all operations with Rowe Arts, Storrs, and Center City Building staff and the College Director of Collaborative Works;
  • Supervise one registrar/installation employee;
  • Supervise College web/social media content related to four galleries;
  • Develop College annual news and fundraising communications documents related to four galleries;
  • Coordinate College gallery presentation materials;
  • Attend both College and community events directly supportive of and connected to the College mission;
  • Represent the College on University, regional, and national arts/design communications committees and associations.


Position begins April 1, 2018. Screening of applicants begins March 1, 2018, and continues until the position is filled.
