Jeffrey B. Plevan Chair in Modern Israel Studies


The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Arizona invites applicants for the Jeffrey B. Plevan Chair in Israel Studies, tenure track, to begin August 2018. We seek to appoint at the Associate or Full Professor rank. The area of specialization under the broad rubric of “Modern Israel Studies” is open, but preference will be given to scholar-teachers with expertise in Cultural Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Gender and Women’s Studies, or related fields in the social sciences and humanities. The University of Arizona boasts a very large contingent of scholars and programs focused on the Middle East, and thanks to the creation of this endowed chair by the Plevan family, it enthusiastically supports the creation of an Israel Studies emphasis. The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies is a dynamic and growing academic unit that has in recent years hosted two successful international Israel Studies conferences. It also offers a vibrant community outreach program that welcomes faculty participation from across the university and beyond.


The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and a record of scholarly excellence in research, teaching, and service/outreach. The Plevan Chair will be a notable scholar who is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, administrative leadership, and to local, national, and international outreach. The position carries a 2-2 teaching load that includes introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses in Modern Israel Studies, as well as occasional graduate-level courses and seminars. A complete application packet will include a CV; the names, titles, and email addresses of at least three references that must be at the level of tenured associate professor or higher; and the candidate’s statement on teaching pedagogy. Review of applications will begin February 16, 2018.
