Position Summary: Please note: This position is located on the NC Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC (near Charlotte), approximately 2 hours from the UNC Chapel Hill main campus. The Research Associate will work as an integral part of the Sumner Lab at the Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) to conduct metabolomics investigations in nutrition, environmental exposures, and metabolic variation. The Research Associate will acquire, analyze, and interpret findings using mass spectrometry, software for statistical and multivariate analysis, and pathway mapping. The individual must have a good understanding of the quality control procedures used in mass spectrometry. Additionally, the Research Associate may participate in establishing and applying new methods in metabolomics data capture and analysis.

Education Requirements: PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or other field relevant to developing and applying mass spectrometry methods is required.
Qualification and Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the application and analysis of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry data with knowledge of QC procedures. Experience in sample extraction and preparation from biospecimens including humans, animals, and cell cultures, as well as experience in handling, storage, and disposal of biospecimens. This position requires strong critical thinking skills, self-direction and motivation, project management skills, effective time management and organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills for communicating scientific results, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Computer skills required: Experience working with Waters and/or Thermo software for mass spectrometry and Microsoft Office. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with metabolomics studies using ThermoFisher Scientific (Orbi-Trap) and/or Waters (Synapt GS2) LC-MS platforms, and identification of environmentally relevant compounds. Knowledge and experience in metabolomics data analysis, e.g., statistical and multivariate data analysis and pathway analysis.
