The post will serve the performance technology curricular needs of the The Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies (AET) in the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin.

AET is a multi-purpose research and educational program dedicated to technology and content entrepreneurship in the arts and entertainment industries. It has a performative focus that explores the intersection of advanced production technologies and live performance. This focus is unique among arts and technology centers and informs program design, research, facilities and admissions criteria. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Arts and Entertainment Technologies offers a full range of courses in music and sound technologies, game and mobile media applications development and emerging technologies for theatrical and event production.

The BS in Arts and Entertainment Technologies merges creative expression with technological innovation. Graduates will be prepared to create digital environments and develop new applications of technology for the entertainment industry. To develop new approaches to staging, creating performances and generating imagery software solutions are not only necessary but are the catalyst for innovation. For performance technologies to be adapted for new purposes the language to which each piece of hardware or software responds has to be understood and translated; for modern hardware to be fully utilized, customized scripting and programming is required. Consequently, coding and scripting for performance and creative technology are a crucial skill set in this area.

Teaching possibilities may include the following: Introductory and advanced level courses in Generative Media, Advanced 3D Production, Physical Computing, Augmented Reality, AV Programming for Live Performance and Visual Programming with Touchdesigner. Applicants must be able to teach three or more of these courses.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Teach introductory and advanced level courses in coding and programming of generative visuals
  • Teach introductory and advanced level courses in coding and programming of interactive performance systems
  • Teach introductory and advanced level courses in Touchdesigner
  • Advise MFA and BS students on individual or group projects

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Either a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field with 5 years professional experience or a Master's Degree with 2 years teaching and/or professional experience (years of experience may be concurrent).
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness of contemporary trends as well as the historical developments in a range of professional and independent performance technologies such as live visuals, generated visuals, creative coding, interactive technology, immersive environments, AR, VR, projection mapping, digital previsualization, depth sensing technologies, photogrammetry, point clouds.
  • Skill Set: Python, C++, Java, Processing, Touchdesigner, Maya, Blender, Open FrameWorks, Unity3D, and Unreal Engine

Desired qualification:
  • Proficiency with professional media servers such as Coolux Pandora's Box, D3, Watchout 6
  • Proficiency in digital 3D model construction and UVW mapping
  • Proficiency with visual programming environments such as Touchdesigner, Isadora, and Widget Designer
  • Professional experience in theatre or live entertainment
  • Candidates who will contribute to the diversity of the center
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in teams and in collaboration across disciplines of dance, theatre, and/or music
  • Proficiency with theatre lighting consoles
  • Proficiency with entertainment communication protocols such as MIDI, MTC, DMX, OSC, RS422, RS232
  • Significant teaching experience at the university level
