Grinnell College is seeking a talented, experienced and versatile educator to serve as the Director of Academic Support for Writing and Speaking in a full-time, 10-month continuing position. The director will advance the Writing Lab’s mission of support of writing and speaking instruction in broad terms: through direct work with individual students, through for-credit courses, through formal and informal faculty development, and through active collaboration with other on-campus entities involved in instruction, assessment, and advising. The director maintains the smooth running of the Writing Lab as a department, acts as the supervisor of all Writing Lab staff, as well as to participates and initiates creative outreach to other faculty in support of writing in particular, and communication broadly. The director is also expected to seek out opportunities to better support all constituencies (such as English language learners) and new media for communication (such as academic poster presentations).

Qualifications:  As the Director will hold Lecturer status, a PhD or master’s degree in an academic field is required. Five years of experience in teaching of writing, and demonstrated ability to supervise others in an academic setting is expected.  A record of effective work with a diverse student body is essential.  Experience with residential liberal arts colleges and writing center administration is desirable.  In letters of application, candidates should address their vision for a collaborative approach to student writing success utilizing writing professionals, peer mentors, and classroom faculty, and outline their experiences that prepare them to lead the Writing Lab in the directions described above.
