Job description

The University of North Alabama (UNA) seeks applications for the position of University Librarian. Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, the University Librarian provides collaborative leadership to develop and implement a shared vision of the library in support of the University’s mission. This position holds faculty status and rank.

The University of North Alabama is located in Florence, Alabama, on the banks of the Tennessee River and enjoys a rich culinary, historical, and musical heritage, along with a thriving arts movement. Educational and recreation opportunities abound.

Collier Library has an operating budget of approximately $2.7 million and employs 8 full-time faculty librarians, 9 support staff, 5 part-time employees, and 19 student employees. Collections include approximately 349,000 volumes, online access to 160+ databases, and access to over 32,000 current online and paper serial subscriptions. For more information see www.una.edu/library. The library uses III’s Sierra integrated library system and is a member of the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries (NAAL), LYRASIS and OCLC.

UNA seeks an experienced, effective leader to guide the provision of evolving, relevant library services. As chief administrator of Collier Library the University Librarian provides vision, leadership, and accountability through collaborative strategic planning and assessment, policy development and implementation, budget preparation and administration, integration of appropriate technology, supervision of faculty and staff, support for professional development, and consortia collaboration. In cooperation with the campus community, the University Librarian develops and guides initiatives that support the learning, teaching, research, service, and administrative goals of the University. Working within a system of shared governance, the University Librarian represents the library and its faculty/staff to internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum qualifications include: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and /or information science (or its equivalent); Five or more years in library administration, preferably academic; Evidence of successful library experience in progressively responsible roles; Strong management and leadership skills in a collegial environment; Ability to create and sustain effective collaborative relationships internally and externally; In-depth understanding of emerging trends and issues in academic libraries, and a strong vision for the future; Demonstrated commitment to the recruitment, professional development, and retention of a talented and diverse workforce; Strong commitment to providing excellent library services, resources, and facilities; Thorough knowledge of academic library operations.
