The Richard Flores Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (RFT MARC), is a premier center for social sciences and humanities research in the Western Pacific and a major resource for material related to Guam and Micronesia.  One of the goals of the RFT MARC is to publish, promote, and distribute materials of scholarly importance relevant to the region that will enhance the intellectual understanding and contribute to the instructional program at the University of Guam and other academic institutions.


This position will support the research, teaching and service missions of the RFT MARC and the University of Guam, with an emphasis on deepening our understanding of the long historical period of Spanish colonial influence in Guam and Micronesia, and with particular attention to utilizing and further developing the Spanish Documents Collection (SDC) of RFT MARC.  This position will involve working collaboratively with local, regional, and international scholars in conducting historical research utilizing the SDC; enhancing access to and dissemination of materials in the SDC; and expanding the holdings of SDC through contacts with scholars and archives around the world.  This position will also support the teaching mission of RFT MARC.  The successful applicant will be expected minimally to teach one course per academic year, at either the graduate or undergraduate level, in support of the Micronesian Studies Program, Chamorro Studies Program, or the History Program.


Minimum: Earned PhD in History or closely related discipline from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent (applicants with foreign-equivalent degrees are responsible for demonstrating equivalence by submitting certification from Educational Credentials Evaluators Inc.); ten (10) years’ experience in historical research on the Spanish Pacific period, with commensurate scholarly publications.  Must be able to demonstrate an ability to work successfully in international and multicultural environments.  Must be bilingual and fluent in English and Spanish and be able to demonstrate excellent capability in both written and oral communication.  The successful applicant must maintain a continuous record of peer-reviewed publications relevant to Guam and Micronesia.  Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred: Graduate teaching experience in the area of Spanish Pacific history.  Lived experience in Guam or other Micronesian islands.  Demonstrated experience in cultural project development such as museum exhibitions and archival projects; demonstrated ability at successful research grant development.
