Led by the Director of Admissions, the Office of Admissions is housed in a multi-unit Enrollment Management (EM) department, under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) Enrollment Management. EM is comprised of seven high-profile, core functional units including: the Office of Admissions, the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, Student Affairs Technology Services (SATS), Creative & Analytical Services, Cal-SOAP, and Parent & Family Programs. EM’s core functions oversee undergraduate admissions, continuing student enrollment management, and financial aid and scholarship management. The Director of Admissions is a key member of the EM leadership team reporting to the AVC EM.
The Office of Admissions leads the university's efforts to identify, recruit, admit, and enroll the next generation of UC San Diego Tritons with particular focus on talented, academically capable, California students, representative of the diversity of the people of California. The mission of the office includes increasing the visibility of UC San Diego in California, the nation and world, through marketing and on- and off- campus recruitment activities to prospective freshmen and transfer students and their families; school counselors; community college leaders and advisors; community based organizations; and educational organizations serving groups historically underrepresented on our campus. The Office of Admissions hosts more than 80,000 visitors and receives, processes, and reviews over 116,000 applications for admission annually. The office works collaboratively with on-and off- campus partners to achieve university goals.
The Director of Admissions, reporting to the AVC EM, is the Chief Admissions Officer responsible for the organization-wide undergraduate admissions function of both domestic and international applicants. The Director, through direct or subordinate leadership, oversees all undergraduate admissions functions such as: day-to-day operations; Triton (visitor) Center; High School and Transfer Student Services; Application Review and Evaluation Services; Operations; Admissions Systems; and Data Management.
The Director visions strategy to achieve desired outcomes using relevant data. The director leads a team of 40+ FTE’s including four direct reports, and more than 150 part-time employees including college ambassadors/tour guides, and has budget responsibility. In collaboration with Admissions Senior Leadership Team, develop short- and long- term goals and strategic plans for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the implementation of University of California and UC San Diego undergraduate admissions policies. The Director recommends, develops and initiates policies and changes in procedure which enhance or improve prospect and pipeline development, recruitment, admissions, and yield that are aligned with campus admission and enrollment goals. Collaborates with AVC EM on modeling and strategy that will produce campus and system desired enrollment outcomes.
Oversee development of multichannel marketing and communication strategy that supports early and broad student pipeline development. Guide operations and technical staff in use of technical systems like Technolutions Slate to support admissions operations. Stay apprised of industry best-practices and when appropriate implement to improve efficiency and increase market competitiveness.
Collaborate across a complex decentralized campus. The Director engages partners such as academic departments, six colleges, advisors, Equity Diversity and Inclusion, University Communication and Public Affairs, Information Technology Services, Athletics, Student Affairs, and offices responsible for historically underrepresented student outreach and pipeline development. Serve on campus committees: Committee on Admissions (faculty led), Student Success Programs, and Colleges Branding Committee. Represent UC San Diego in California, nationally and internationally on University of California committees or workgroups, professional associations (NACAC, College Board, NAFSA and ACAOPU, for example), and in the school counseling/transfer advising community.
Strive to create synergy within EM and work closely with leadership to foster improved culture, shared values, professional development opportunities in support of EM employees and the students we serve.
Occasional evenings and weekends, travel within California and domestically, as associated with events and meetings.
• Ten years of progressively responsible admissions experience preferably earned in a fast-paced, high volume US public flagship or AAU institution, practicing holistic selective admissions. Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred.
• Expert knowledge of admissions and outreach programs. Demonstrated undergraduate admissions experience leading efforts in a fast-paced, high volume, selective public or private research institution. Experience in creating and executing strategic plans based on short- and long- range university goals and experience in developing and refining holistic admissions processes. Familiarity with the California secondary school and community college landscape and experience developing state, national and international recruitment strategies.
• Creativity and originality in problem-solving. Proven ability to identify, interpret and evaluate issues and trends relevant to the area of Admissions and Enrollment Management. Demonstrated leadership ability in complex, highly diversified and decentralized situations. Ability to operate effectively within a large public research university. Advanced skills in creative problem solving, collaboration, change management and shaping organizational effectiveness. Demonstrated critical thinking and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, interpret policies, identify concerns, develop and implement solutions. Ability to act persuasively.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to produce correspondence and analytical reports for multiple audiences.
• Ability to act persuasively and tactfully in politically nuanced situations. Strong leadership skills. Proven ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of individuals. A high level of political acumen, diplomacy, and insight regarding the complex relationships and inter-dependencies of campus and system wide entities. Effective negotiating skills.
• Skills in monitoring people, processes, or services for evaluation and improvement. Mentorship skills and the ability to identify leadership and management qualities in staff. Ability to evaluate staff personnel performance and advise supervisors on appropriate policies and practices. Demonstrated skill and knowledge to effectively supervise staff including delegation and reassignment of tasks, monitoring production and quality of work, setting performance standards, assessing individual capabilities and workloads, conducting performance evaluations and corrective action and mediation.
• Skills in conflict management, complex problem-solving, and resource and time management. Proven ability to impact positive change in a decentralized organization with multiple layers of oversight. Demonstrated experience in managing a complex office with competing tasks and priorities.
• Advanced skills in conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving. Ability to effectively influence in challenging or charged situations. Ability to manage staff and operations in a complex organization which provides services to a diverse clientele.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other campus entities. Demonstrated ability and commitment to engage on- and off-campus partners from a range of backgrounds. Support and collaborate with ethnically diverse faculty, administrators, staff, students, and families; University of California Office of the President; alumni; school counselors, transfer advisors and community based organizations; industry peers; and others supporting UC San Diego's educational mission and interest in enrolling the next generation of Tritons.
• Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques. Experience with salary and operations budget management.
• Proven skills in statistics, quantitative analysis, research methodology, assessment and/or evaluation.
• Skills in project management. Demonstrated experience establishing and accomplishing short and long term goals and objectives.
• Proven ability to develop, influence or oversee multichannel marketing and communication strategy that supports early and broad prospect pipeline development.
• Background Check required.
• Valid driver's license.
