New Jersey City University (NJCU) is seeking its inaugural Director for the NJCU Center for the Arts. In this full-time position, the successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the vision, direction and goals of the Center for the Arts, in addition to providing the leadership necessary to run the organization.  

Applicants must be entrepreneurial, able to engage with multiple community partners and stakeholders, and have the creative and administrative expertise to develop an artistic vision and organizational strategy and ensure that required resources to achieve goals can be secured. 

The Director reports to the Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at NJCU and works with a recently formed Arts Advisory Board towards realizing role of NJCU as a leading arts force in Jersey City and the region. Individual must be ready to work with colleagues on and off campus on developing programs as well as building and operating a new Center for the Arts facility that will house a 490-seat theatre, a 100-seat recital hall, and as serve as the home of the Music, Dance and Theatre (MDT) Department.

Long considered a cultural hub of metro-north Jersey, NJCU boasts an accomplished international faculty in many disciplines, from music to theatre, to media and visual arts and literature. 

In November 2016, under the vision of President Sue Henderson, the University launched the NJCU Center for the Arts to bring its performing, visual, film and literary arts activities under one creative umbrella. As part of this initiative, NJCU is committed to taking a leadership role in the cultural vitality of the Jersey City Region. NJCU also formed an Arts Advisory Board dedicated to supporting the Center for the Arts efforts to enhance cultural opportunities both on and off-campus.

Responsibilities of the Director:

Solidify position of NJCU as a leader in the arts in Jersey City and the region by working in conjunction with NJCU Senior Administration, faculty and community stakeholders, notably the Cultural Affairs division of the Jersey City Mayor’s Office.

Develop and implement programming and initiatives that fulfill NJCU’s role as a leader in the arts in Jersey City and enhance NJCU’s reputation as a “go to” university for students seeking quality performing and visual arts educational opportunities.

Spearhead fundraising and marketing efforts on behalf of the Center for the Arts, working with NJCU development and communications staff to fulfill development strategies and marketing campaigns, as well as engage members of the Arts Advisory Board and other key stakeholders who may have access to financial and in-kind resources.

Working in close collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Development & Executive Director of the NJCU Foundation, serve as the Chief Development Officer for the NJCU Center for the Arts.

Develop/enhance revenue streams through ticket sales, merchandising, venue rentals, sponsorships, advertisements and other creative means.

Create a robust set of Arts programming that drive attendance to the NJCU campus from members of the Jersey City community and broader region.

Devise and implement a strategy for collecting, storing, analyzing, and using consumer data to inform the marketing and development strategies and initiatives.

Create schedule of programs to take place at campus facilities including the 1,000-seat Williams Theatre in Hepburn Hall and the 100-150-seat West Side Theatre (black box). Create plan for future programming for the 490-seat theater and 100-seat recital hall in the new Center for the Arts facility.

Work with NJCU faculty curators to integrate visual arts and media programs in context with performing arts programming.

Explore opportunities for off-site programming to showcase the work of faculty and students and build NJCU’s profile and brand in the communities where students and their families live and work.

Serve as a senior member of the Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer’s senior staff, which also includes the Associate Vice President of Marketing & Communications, the Assistant Vice President of Advancement & Executive Director of the NJCU Foundation, the Director of Event Services, and the Director of Athletics.

Serve as a public representative of NJCU both on and off-campus.

Serve as “Executive Director” of the Arts Advisory Board which was formed to support NJCU’s efforts to be a strong partner in enhancing the cultural vitality of Jersey City and the region. 

Manage small staff and ensure the capacity of the organization to fulfill vision and goals. This includes overseeing box office and front of house staff, and working closely with the production team, in addition to serving as “artistic director” of the Center for the Arts.

Manage relationships between the Center for the Arts and the University’s academic and administrative departments.

Perform related duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications/Skills:
 
Experience in curating performing arts programs.

Experience designing, developing, and operating performing arts venues.

Ability to identify and interpret dynamics of the “communities” Center for the Arts will serve, and create programming of impact and value to these constituencies.

Ability to communicate the identity of Center for the Arts and engage audiences to attend paid ticketed events and free programming.

Vision and experience to spearhead fundraising efforts in tandem with development staff. 

Experience leading and managing staff towards realizing both short and long-term goals.

Ability to develop and manage budgets.

Adept at managing small staff and volunteers/interns with formal and informal reporting lines and ability to build and manage the organization as it grows to meet future demands and expectations. 
 
Requirements:

. BA, MA or MFA preferred
. Minimum seven years of work in professional performing arts organization(s).
. Experience managing staff with formal reporting lines
. Excellent oral and written communications skills
. Availability to work evenings and weekends
