Mount Saint Mary College seeks two full time, 12 month Laboratory Technicians to start in early May:



The laboratory technician works closely with the Natural Science faculty and department chair to support laboratory based teaching activities. Support includes the laboratory setup and preparation of materials for courses offered by the division; management of associated labs and preparatory spaces; supervision and training of student workers; communicating with full and part-time faculty; coordinating purchasing of materials and equipment with the Division administrative assistant; management of inventory and chemical waste; and maintenance of laboratory equipment. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Employment to Laboratory Technician I or II positions will be dependent on applicant qualifications.


Laboratory Technician I:

The Laboratory Technician I position will work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Technician II to assist with the following activities:


  • Coordination of laboratory instructional materials and specific laboratory duties with chairperson and science faculty members, full-time and adjunct.
  • Preparation of lab instructional materials (solutions, cultures, unknowns, glassware, equipment, general supplies, etc.) for multiple biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics courses.
  • Instruction, supervision, and evaluation of Work Study students regarding laboratory duties.
  • Assist students conducting research projects with laboratory needs.
  • Oversight of supplies and equipment inventory, maintenance of records in cooperation with the Division administrative assistant.
  • Checking on classes in session for last minutes needs.
  • Assist with coordinating the Quality Assurance activities of the Natural Science Division as outlined in the College’s Chemical Hygiene Plan under direction of the Assistant Director of Security/Safety.
  • Assist with maintaining and controlling the inventory and acquisition of laboratory chemicals and equipment in order to assure that the standards of handling and storage are properly met.
  • Assist with performing chemical processes, such as neutralizations and dilutions to assure that chemical disposal is in compliance with all governmental regulations.
  • Assist with identifying, segregating, and properly storing chemical waste that is targeted for disposal.
  • Assist with assuring that hazardous materials in the science areas are stored, handled, and disposed of in compliance with all regulations and that the appropriate documentation is maintained.



  • Bachelor's Degree in one of the sciences, i.e., Biology or Chemistry.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Laboratory Technician II:

The Laboratory Technician II position will assume all of the responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician I position plus the following activities:


  • Supervision and Recruitment of Laboratory Technician I.
  • Instruction, supervision, and evaluation of Work Study students & Lab Technician I regarding laboratory duties.
  • Coordinate with the faculty members of the Division to purchase materials needed for the labs.
  • Familiarize new instructors with MSMC procedures.
  • Routinely inspect safety features in the science areas, maintain records, and inform the Chair of the Division of areas needing remediation.



  • Bachelor's Degree in one of the sciences, i.e., Biology or Chemistry.
  • Practical laboratory experience in both biology and chemistry laboratories providing familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Experience with EPA and OSHA safety regulations for storage and disposal of chemicals.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
