About the Unit
Established in 1996, the University of Chicago's Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH) serves a diverse community of students engaged in innovative intellectual work that draws on the remarkable resources of the Humanities Division at Chicago. The MAPH Mentorship is designed to support the academic work of the students in our one-year program and to support and program supplemental educational and career development events for the students. The Internship is designed to offer summer pedagogical training to the interns and to serve as writing interns to participants in the College core. The MAPH community is close-knit and enthusiastic, and our success depends on the excellent work of our mentors. Together with the rest of the MAPH staff and preceptors, our mentors actively engage with and help approximately one hundred new graduate students through an intensive year to a master's degree in June.

Job Information

Job Summary:

This job has duties to the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities and the Writing Program in the College. MAPH Mentors work with the rest of the MAPH staff to build community among current MAPH students and to ensure the smooth running of the program. Mentors help plan and execute program events, meet with and counsel current students, and meet regularly with prospective students. A mentor should be mature, creative, patient, approachable, flexible, detail-oriented, informed about the University of Chicago and the program, organized, and committed to the value of MAPH. The focus as Writing Program Intern is teaching writing in the Humanities Common Core. The Common Core is a two- or three-quarter course for first-year students in the College. There are several types of Common Core classes, including Greek Thought & Literature, Philosophical Perspectives on the Humanities, Readings in World Literature, Human Being and Citizen, and Reading Cultures. Classes are discussions with about 20-25 students. The Humanities Core intern collaborates with the faculty instructor of the course: s/he attends class sessions; reads, comments on, and grades student papers, and teaches academic writing techniques in small seminar groups.

Writing intern responsibilities:

  • Attends mandatory summer training sessions (roughly from Jun 20 through Jul 30)
  • Teaches writing seminars for two sections of Humanities Core Classes per term (likely one section in Spring Quarter). This averages 10 hours per week per course, but can range between 6 and 40 hours.
  • Schedules seminars, plans lessons, holds office hours, serves as a resource to students
  • Grades and gives extensive comments on essay assignments
  • Usually teaches one or two full class sections per academic term

MAPH Mentor responsibilities:
  • Advising: Providing personal, academic, and professional guidance for current MAPH students; holding regular office hours and offering availability by email for individual meetings
  • Event Planning: Planning and executing all program-wide events, large and small (everything between the opening barbecue and commencement). This includes things like the works in progress conference, prom, graduation luncheon, alumni career night, brown-bag lunch sessions, visiting author readings, etc.
  • Supporting the Office: Answering phones, cleaning office and lounge, making copies, compiling Core Course materials, posting lectures, running errands, managing databases, etc.
  • Online Communication: Writing regular program news and events and monitoring listservs; emailing alums and students; maintaining Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts
  • Running Social Hour: setting up, attending, and cleaning up after all Social Hours throughout the year (roughly 20 Friday afternoons/evenings).
  • Leading the MAPH Community Board: Facilitating acquisition of student government funds for social outings; collaborating with the community board to host events (trivia, Halloween party, ice skating, open-mic nights, talent show, pot-luck, etc.); attending all community board-sponsored events
  • Corresponding with prospective students and organizing Campus Days
  • Attending staff meetings and communicating with Preceptors and Co-Directors

  • Ability to teach a Humanities Core course
  • Ability to provide critical review of written material with a view towards teaching rather than being punitive
  • MS office suite
  • Familiarity with social media platforms
  • Drupal content management system preferred
  • Filemaker or other database software or spreadsheets
  • Ability to manage events from start to finish

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Master's degree in Humanities from the University of Chicago (MAPH) with degree anticipated Spring 2018, required.


The following are preferred:
  • Peer mentoring experience
  • Event planning experience
  • Writing, marketing and communication experience

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Advanced writing and proofreading skills
  • Skilled at providing critical review of written material with a view toward teaching rather than being punitive.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Office environment while in Mentor role
  • Classroom environment while in Writing Intern role
  • Some evening and weekend work

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to push carts with up to 40 lbs of material
