Minimum Education/Experience: Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Job Duties: The primary purpose of the Physician Extender is to provide medical care and education to patients on an outpatient basis at ECU Physicians, Firetower Medical Office. This involved performing a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the supervision of a licensed physician employed by Brody School of Medicine at ECU. The Physician Extender is responsible for diagnosis, treatment, and management of the patient's acute or chronic healthcare problems. The PE is also responsible for assisting in the supervision of clinical staff and serving as a role model for professional behavior. CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION - NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT. The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
