University Information Technology Services (UITS) is a department within the UMass System Office that supports a wide range of constituents, both at the campuses and the President’s Office. We are committed to providing high quality information technology service and leadership that enable the mission of the University of Massachusetts.  We work directly with staff at Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell and the Medical School to deliver important services to the University’s students, faculty, and staff.

The Business Systems Analyst I is primarily responsible for the day-to-day operational support of the Peoplesoft Human Capital Management (HCM) Systems and related integrated applications; monitoring processes, uploading data, troubleshooting production issues, etc.  The Business Systems Analyst I assists Application Specialists and Principal Application Specialists in the development of system enhancements and improved business processes. 

At the project task level, the Analyst participates in the development of functional specifications, testing, proactively acts upon work assignments as required, delivers on project tasks, ensures the accuracy of application systems documentation and assists in the development of end user training.

Essential Functions:
  • Primary support for the weekly and bi-weekly processes throughout the HCM system:
    • Closely monitor and coordinate batch and ad hoc jobs
    • Analyze and trouble shoot operational issues; escalating more complex issues to other team mates
    • Follow through on any issue or event until completion, including documentation
    • Provide on-call support on nights and weekends based on a rotation schedule
  • Closely collaborate and communicate verbally with developers and technical teammates
  • Under the guidance of Application Specialist or Principal Application Specialist:
    • Translate functional business requirements into design criteria
    • Prioritize work to meet campus expectations and deadlines 
    • Document functional specifications
    • Create and execute test scenarios
  • Detail-oriented work and excellent organization skill
  • Communicate and express ideas and information verbally, both one-on-one and in meetings, in a manner that is clear and concise.
  • Presents prepared information in a manner that holds customers' interest and addresses their needs and concerns, and corresponds to the audience being addressed.
    • Presents technical information so that it can be understood by non-technical audiences.
  • Assess alternatives and presents logical solutions to problems.
  • Multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
Other Functions:
  • Primary support for Payroll Operations and other assigned Operations areas
  • Manage Environment Refreshes
  • Testing support for Tax Updates, Calendar Year End and Fiscal Year End
  • Develop, document and revise system design procedures, test procedures, and quality standards.
  • Test Studio test scripting and maintenance
  • Support Mass Salary and other uploads as required
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
    • Education equivalent to a college degree in an information technology related or business administration related discipline, or the equivalent in related work experience with emphasis in information systems
    • Computer programming or query language
    • Experience in creating and maintaining a positive customer service relationship and understanding customers' needs.
    • Present written information in a clear, concise and organized manner. 
    Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
    • Solid understanding of HR Systems such as PeopleSoft
    • Experience working in Higher Education
    • SQL query
    • Critical Thinking — using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. 
    • Systems Analysis — Determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes. 
    • Active Learning — Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. 
    • Learning Strategies — Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things. 
    • Troubleshooting — Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
    • Ability to receive ideas, thoughts and information without interrupting. Ensures comprehension of what is being said; asks questions to achieve understanding, as appropriate.
    • Take independent action rather than passively reacting to events as they occur.
    • Ability to make practical, timely and realistic decisions after considering possible outcomes as well as corresponding risks.
    • Able to use reason and discretion, when dealing with sensitive data and processes

    Working Conditions:
    • Office Environment. 
    • Multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
    • Occasional, non-standard scheduled work hours, such as evenings or weekends may be required. Required to be On-call approx. once every 3 to 5 weeks. Occasional day trips to the campuses. Potential for one day a week remote work in line with the Telecommuting Policy.

  • This is a full time benefited position
  • The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000
  • No relocation assistance provided
