About the Position:
Baylor University, a private Christian University, seeks a Provost to advance ambitious academic initiatives and research programs that position the University to become a top-tier research institution with a vital Christian identity and focus. The Provost has direct responsibility for implementing Baylor's strategic vision and academic plan, Pro Futuris, including initiatives for transformational education, compelling scholarship, informed engagement, committed constituents, and judicious stewardship. The Provost reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the President's Council.

The successful candidate will develop strategic collaborative initiatives that strengthen Baylor's academic excellence. When asked about key issues for the Provost's leadership, most faculty respondents indicated diversity and inclusion, supporting changes needed to achieve R1/T1 status (including support for faculty), and increasing research and scholarship, while keeping a steadfast focus on the commitment to Baylor's Christian mission and the quality of the undergraduate learning experience. The Provost must be an innovative, intellectual, and collaborative leader who is deeply committed to Christ and to service in their church.

  • Directly oversee the Council of Deans, vice provosts, directors and co-directors for centers and institutes, and all supporting personnel of the Academy
  • Leadership of all academic and research programs of the University
  • Setting and advocating sound, strategic academic priorities that respect the past, understand the present, and envision the future
  • Supporting the Christian mission of the University, including mission-driven faculty recruitment and hiring processes;
  • Enhancing the University's academic programs and pursuits
  • Oversight of academic facilities and academic support services
  • Administration of all academic human resources policies and procedures, including appointments, tenure, promotion, compensation, and benefits, for faculty and academic staff
  • Prioritizing and administering an academic budget in excess of $250 million
  • Assuring that administrative procedures preserve academic freedom and promote academic responsibility
  • Supervision of policies and procedures regarding the organization of academic programs, units, and functions in order to preserve the quality, integrity, and vitality of the University
  • Demonstrating and communicating a commitment to compliancy with the regulatory requirements of the university (i.e., Title IX, EEOC, Civil Rights Act, Cleary Act, etc.)
  • Representation of the University to state, national, and international groups
  • Collaboration with other senior leaders to advise on university strategy
