RESEARCH SPECIALIST D
Duties: The Product Development Research Specialist D will provide support for multiple research projects related to improving gene/cell therapy product development in the Center for Cellular Immunotherapy (CCI) at the University of Pennsylvania. This individual will report directly to the Director and Project Managers of Product Development and be responsible for development and implementation of assays supporting all the research activities at the Product Development Laboratory (PDL). Primary duties will include the development and implementation of high quality polychromatic flow cytometry and cell-based assays, clinical-scale cell processing for the isolation, transduction, expansion, formulation and cryopreservation of human T cells. During the process of cell culture, aseptic sterile techniques and universal blood precautions will be observed. Additional responsibilities will include the development and qualification/validation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), performance of assays, data analysis and presentation of data, laboratory management duties including materials and equipment management, training others in techniques and procedures, and interactions with vendors. Expertise with polychromatic flow cytometry, general laboratory operations, and the handling and processing of primary clinical samples are pre-requisites for this position. This position requires an extensive training period for an individual who is able to excel in a group while also demonstrating a capability for decisiveness, attention to detail and personal responsibility. Finally, the Product Development Research Specialist D will undertake cross-functional engagement with the Cell and Vaccine Production Facility (CVPF) and Translational and Correlative Sciences (TCSL) teams for translation of new processes/genetically-engineered cellular products to the clinic.
Qualifications: The minimum of a Master's degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. PhD and 3-5 years of relevant experience in immunology, tissue culture, flow cytometry, and related disciplines preferred. Understanding of manufacturing and product development as it relates to gene and cell therapy. Prior experience working in large, complex organizations such as the University of Pennsylvania. Prior experience with providing support for complicated research projects with multiple sub-teams of researchers.
Previous lab experience in areas of cancer and HIV preferred
