Scientific Instrument Support Specialist

Position Status: Administrative Exempt Positions

Basic Function:
Assist Faculty with managing and maintaining scientific instruments and attached to PCs and workstations that are critical to support the core mission of WPI teaching and research, in coordination with Academic Department heads and lab managers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Academic and Research Computing, the Scientific Instrument Support Specialist will support the existing PCs attached to instruments by repairing PC hardware, troubleshooting operating systems and installing drivers appropriate to the instruments.
  • Install, verify, document, and maintain PCs and Workstations that are integral to the operation of the instruments.
  • Work with Academic Dept. Heads, Provost Office, Faculty and lab managers to complete the inventory of existing instruments with all the relevant information.
  • Work with members of the ARC team and the faculty to configure processes for backup and retention of both raw and analyzed data from the instruments to appropriate network storage arrays.
  • Work closely with Information Security Group to properly secure and monitor the PCs/Workstations attached to instruments mitigating the risk from viruses and ransom ware therefore greatly reducing instrument downtime.
  • Work with ARC and Application Development Team led by Bob Brown to make the inventory of instruments searchable and available for scheduling on the web if so desirable.
  • Other related duties as required.

    Position Requirements

  • BS in Science or Engineering Desired or equivalent in experience.
  • Working knowledge of PC hardware environment; Windows OS is a must.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are an absolute requirement to establish effective working relationships with faculty, students and staff.
  • Experience working in laboratory environments a plus.
  • Possess an eagerness to complete increasingly complex assignments
