Tenure-track Position in Music Education
The Department of Music, Dance and Theatre invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment as assistant professor, commencing September 2018, to teach at New Jersey City University (NJCU) William J. Maxwell College of Arts & Sciences.
Candidates should have an earned doctorate in Music Education or a related field, should provide evidence of excellence in teaching, should have an active research agenda that would involve undergraduates at a regional comprehensive university such as NJCU, and should have a proven record of recruitment. The successful applicant will be required to teach both basic and advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, will be expected to develop new programs and course offerings for the Music, Dance and Theatre Department (MDT), maintain active scholarly engagement in their respective field, and lead both small and large instrumental or vocal ensembles.
Highly motivated candidates with a minimum of four years public school teaching experience or related work experience are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be required to collaborate with MDT faculty in interviewing, advising, and responding to prospective transfer students, certification-only students, undergraduate students, and graduate students in the area of music education. The selected candidate will also provide advisement and mentoring for all undergraduate and graduate students in Music Education. This will include coordinating the application process for Music Education Clinical Experience and Clinical Practice Interns, and also helping students prepare or the Praxis Core, Praxis Content Area, and edTPA assessment. The candidate of choice will be expected to supervise/coordinate the Music Education Adjunct Staff--especially regarding student teaching assignments, and should be able to collaborate/communicate with School Music Supervisors and Cooperating Teachers in the NJCU area as well as the State of New Jersey. S/he will also coordinate, recommend, and propose qualified public and private school music teachers to serve as cooperating teachers for NJCU Music Education Clinical Experience and Clinical Practice Interns.
The candidate of choice should also have significant knowledge of NASM requirements to provide leadership and participation in accreditation for music education at the state and national level. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively and in a collegial, professional manner with students, faculty and staff; have the ability to meet goals and deadlines; and demonstrate commitment to the university, division, and profession. Candidates should also have the ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. Applicants with an interest and expertise in music education are encouraged to apply. In extraordinary cases, as determined by the University, a doctoral or terminal degree may not be necessary.
