Primary Function of Organization Unit: The College of Textiles (COT) is recognized as a worldwide leader in textile education and research. The interdisciplinary COT incorporates programs that approach science from both fundamental and applied perspectives. Current academic and research programs deliver knowledge that informs global textile supply chains based on inputs from chemistry, design, engineering, management and marketing. Areas of emphasis include: brand management, color science and chemistry, composites, fashion design, fibers, forensics, medical textiles, nano-textiles, nonwovens, polymer science, protective clothing, smart textiles, supply chain management, sustainability, transportation textiles and textile design. The College currently serves a diverse population, including approximately 1,000 undergraduate students, 220 graduate students, 60 full-time faculty members, 20 visiting scholars & post-docs, and 75 technical and administrative staff members. Located on NC State's Centennial Campus, the COT is recognized globally as a model for integrating the traditional university academics and the activities of research institutes into a unified model. Significant features of the COT include: The Nonwovens Institute, the Textile Protection and Comfort Center, and the Zeis Textile Extension Education for Economic Development Center. Due to these resources, COT facilities offer a full range of operational manufacturing capabilities, from synthesizing new polymers and producing nanofibers to making textile-based end products. The College is comprised of two academic departments: The Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management and The Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science. The two departments offer bachelor's degrees in Fashion and Textile Management, Fashion and Textile Design, Textile Technology, Polymer and Color Chemistry, and Textile Engineering. At the graduate level, the two departments offer a combined four master's degrees and two doctoral degrees. The College's degree programs constantly evolve to provide classroom experiences that address the changing needs of industry and society.

Essential Job Duties: The Academic Advisor will provide proactive advising to current and prospective Textiles students based on a developmental philosophy of advising following NACADA standards. She/he will maintain an advising load of 100-120 students. Additional responsibilities will include: * Teach assigned sections of a first-year experience course each fall and spring. Assist with recruitment efforts such as Open House, College Fairs, High School Summer Programs, Centennial Scholarship Weekend, etc. * Participate in ongoing professional advisor training to remain informed regarding degree requirements and policies. * Assist with preparation and presentations for New Student Orientation. * Coordinate College of Textile Tutorial Program- hire and train tutors for the walk-in tutoring program.

Minimum Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, at least 18 credits of completed graduate coursework in a relevant program (Higher Education, Counseling, Textiles) and one year of experience in academic advising or student services in higher education.

Department Required Skills: Must be willing to work occasional evenings and an average of 4-5 weekends per year. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse students and staff within the university and with outside groups. Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Master's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in counseling, education, or a related field. At least two years of experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising or student services. Experience teaching first-year courses. Academic background or professional experience in textiles.
