Nature of Work:
The Director of IT Project Management oversees and coordinates the technical implementation of funded IT projects for Albany State University. The IT Project Management Office works as a liaison between user departments throughout the University and Information Technology Services staff to develop, monitor, and manage large scale IT projects. This position is responsible for overseeing the project management team to ensure that it is a cohesive team and is meeting their job responsibilities and expectations. This position is responsible for using consistent project management methodologies and timely project completions. This is an "advanced" level position.
Training and Experience:
Education / Certifications:
Bachelor's degree and 2+ experience or 6+ years comparable/related experience
IT Certified Project Manager (ITCMP), certified Project Management Professional (PMP) (preferred) or the ability to achieve CAPM certification within first 6 months of hire.
Project Management tools such as SmartSheet (preferred), Microsoft Project, etc.
Microsoft Office 365 Suite (required)
Organizing, planning, and prioritizing work
Making decisions and solving problems
Strong customer-service orientation
Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language
Highly self-motivated and directed
Keen attention to detail
Knowledge / Experience:
Thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of project management discipline, phases, techniques and tools
Strong and tested project management skills, including sponsor and risk management.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, production methods, and coordination of people and resources in a college or university environment.
Strong project management skills including project planning and organization, monitoring progress and objectives, results tracking, and motivating employee teams.
Strong written and verbal communications are essential for this position. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
The Director of IT Project Management works closely with the CIO and executive ITS leadership to develop ITS strategic plans, enhance customer relationships and provide project management direction ensuring alignment with University and ITS Divisional objectives, missions and vision.
Direct oversight for any ITS project managers in order provide visibility into the many tasks needed to execute the project, to clearly and frequently communicate the status of projects and tasks, and to work closely with the Project Sponsor to make sure the project is delivered as close to the forecasted time, budget & scope as possible.
Project Management Support: training, tools, and templates to support project management methodology; management of select projects
Portfolio Management: project and resource tracking and reporting
Demand Management: project intake and governance review
Requirements gathering: as-needed gathering of preliminary functional or technical requirements
The Director of IT Project Management facilitates intake of project requests, reviews the request, meets with appropriate ITS staff to determine technical feasibility and approach, works with customer and ITS for estimate of effort, and presents the request to ITS leadership for review and prioritization. The successful candidate must form strong partnerships with senior department business managers to ensure that relationships and communications with the ITS group remain strong. The IT PMO will also work with ISO, Procurement, Legal, etc. as appropriate.
