ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, ENGLISH & COMMUNICATION
The communication and strategic communication programs in the Department of English & Communication at Fontbonne University invite applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to join a vigorous and committed faculty in preparing students to be effective, responsible professional communicators who will contribute to ethical, equitable, and just workplaces and communities.
Required qualifications include:
- A teacher and scholar/practitioner who complements existing faculty and provides expertise in organizational, strategic, or applied communication (or a related sub-field) with a critical/cultural orientation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to issues related to diversity, equity, and social justice.
- A Ph.D. in Communication (or closely related field), or a Master of Arts degree in Communication (or closely related field) and only dissertation remaining with Ph.D. completion expected by August 2019. Candidates who are ABD may be appointed at the rank of instructor, with conversion to a tenure track appointment upon completion of the Ph.D. prior to August 2019. Candidates not completing the Ph.D. by August 2019 may be issued a term contract.
Desired qualifications: The department is especially interested in applicants who ground their teaching in theoretically-informed, high-impact experiences (e.g., project-based, service-based, or community-engaged approaches). Interest or experience in media and digital media production is a plus. A variety of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are welcome, especially those that would supplement and complement the department's existing expertise in rhetorical theory and criticism. Experience developing courses and teaching as the instructor of record is preferred.
Teaching responsibilities include four undergraduate courses per semester. Depending on qualifications, teaching opportunities may include courses such as research methods, advanced interpersonal communication, gender communication, organizational communication, social media communication, public speaking, hybrid basic communication, and/or digital publications. Other responsibilities include advising, participating in departmental and university service, and contributing to enrollment increases in a small department that is working diligently to grow. Engagement in the field as demonstrated by a scholarly program of work is expected. Oversight of the department's digital media platform/practicum experience (The Griffin Roar) may be included in the duties of interested and qualified applicants.
