Assistant Professor of Biology
The Department of Biophysical Chemistry & Mathematics at Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) is accepting applications for a tenure-track academic position in Biology, starting in Fall 2019, at the Rank of Assistant Professor. A Ph.D. in Biology is required as is a commitment to excellence in teaching and to the liberal arts college. Preference will be given to a candidate who has experience teaching diverse populations at the undergraduate college level. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lecture and laboratory based undergraduate courses including Introduction to Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Microbiology, and possible courses in Forensic Biology, and Forensic Molecular Biology. Additionally, the successful candidate will participate in institutional committee and departmental meetings, maintain professional skills through professional development, and perform other duties as assigned. Aside from teaching, the potential candidate will be encouraged to support research that is suitable for undergraduate-level students with an emphasis on pedagogical research rather than extensive laboratory research.
DEPARTMENT OF BIOPHYSICAL CHEMISTRY AND MATHEMATICS.
Our department consists of two programs: science and mathematics. A successful candidate will be part of science program, which offers B.S. degrees in Biomedical Science, Forensic Biotechnology, and Kinesiology as well as a minor in Exercise and Sport Science. Following the mission of the college in serving an underserved population of students, the successful candidate will ensure meaningful assessment of student achievement, facilitate early identification of at-risk students, and be available to support student learning as needed. Moreover, the department has a record of pre-medical and graduate school preparation and provides support for those who want to pursue graduate study in biology, chemistry and biochemistry. As part of a newer department, the candidate will have the opportunity to shape the direction of the programs. The science courses are housed in a modern, well-equipped science wing. The science program has extensive instrumentation including a FTIR, UV-Vis, Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Shaking Incubator, Agarose and SDS Gel Electrophoresis, Sonic Dismembrator, Autoclave, Inverted Microscope, Centrifuge, Nanodrop Fluorimeter, -80o Fridge, Biological Safety Cabinet, Microplate Reader, Gaussian quantum chemistry software, Molecular dynamics software (amber) and hardware.
