Faculty, Assistant Professor - Digital Product Design & UX

Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)

This position joins the Digital Media faculty in the Web Technologies degree program and teaches Interaction Design, User Experience Design, Digital Product Design, and forms of Digital Storytelling, as well as extensive technical capabilities with software platforms used in the digital product design industry, and other needed courses.

You will coordinate with other faculty and teach in live face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities and teach night classes as well as day classes as needed.

You will develop courses and content as needed, both alone and in collaboration with others.

Typically the position requires 80% of work time in teaching activities, and 20% of work time in scholarly and service activities, and keeping industry ties and interactions strong and positive.

Requires travel to attend conferences and training - local, national and international.

May be required to teach day, evening, online, off-campus, blended or distance ed courses.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, or related design discipline e.g., Design, Communication Design, Media Design, etc., terminal degree preferred.

Minimum of three years of professional experience in digital product design-related and/or expert UX-UI discipline(s).

Demonstrated commitment to teaching and previous educational participation preferred.

A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, industry, staff and students

Experience working on a variety of interactive design and user experience design projects.

Must be available full-time starting August 1, 2018

Must be authorized to work in the United States; if you hold a visa, your visa status must allow you to work at UVU.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • The ideal candidate will be experienced in UX/IxD/Product Design creative processes and methodologies that employ sketching, wire-framing, prototyping, and conceptualization techniques through delivery.
  • Must posses Visual Design skills in layout, typography, and color application, and be able to teach these creative elements to students in highly technical scenarios that include mobile, home, and auto platforms with an emphasis on UI, publication, and Internet-based subscription media platforms. * Demonstrates a command of interaction design, visual design and information design/architecture with a mind for teaching students the art of simplicity.
  • Requires insightful thinking, prolific exploration and a knack for experimentation
  • The ideal candidate will be well versed in the use of programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign as well as SketchApp, Hype, and InVision prototyping-like tools.
  • Must possess a strong familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML languages to be effective.
  • An understanding of the digital publication process and subscription-based media is also preferred, and would include DPS, MagPlus, ePub 3.0, and new XML-based news subscription languages and technologies entering the market to build on future curriculum needs.
  • The ideal candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • This individual is a master of desktop and mobile platforms (Mac OS, Windows, iOS and Android) and connectivity services while integrating equipment into classrooms and development sandboxes.
