Faculty - Assistant Professor - Web Tech and App Development

Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)

This position joins the Digital Media faculty in the Web Technologies degree program and teaches HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, databases (MySQL & MongoDB), frameworks, API's (REST, SOAP, Oauth), GIT version control, cross browser compatibility, and other needed courses. Coordinates with other faculty and teach in live face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities, and teaches night classes as well as day classes as needed. Develops courses and content as needed, both alone and in collaboration with others. Spends 80% of work time in teaching activities, and 20% of work time in scholarly and service activities, and keeping industry ties and interaction strong.

Must be available full-time starting August 1, 2018.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Web Frameworks or Languages, Digital Media, Web-Centric Information Technology, or related discipline, terminal degree preferred.

Minimum of three years of professional experience in web & app development-related fields.

Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content.

Demonstrated commitment to teaching with excellence.

Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university.

Must be authorized to work in the United States; if you hold a visa, your visa status must allow you to work at UVU.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be experienced in web development processes and methodologies that employ source code origination and versioning, Agile approaches, prototyping, build/test/deploy tools, and application delivery on multiple devices including mobile.
  • Must be experienced in working on a large variety of websites and web application development projects.
  • Must have a command of web application design/architecture with a mind for teaching students how to leverage the latest tools and techniques to simplify website and web application development.
  • Must understand to a substantial level JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, databases (MySQL & MongoDB), frameworks, API’s (REST, SOAP, Oauth), GIT version control, and cross browser compatibility.
  • Must demonstrate insightful thinking, continuous exploration, and a love for discovery and innovation with a passion for igniting those same qualities in students.
  • Must know and implement source code control using Git and/or tools such as NPM, Gulp, and the command line.
  • Must understand and be able to demonstrate and teach test-driven development and tools such as ReactJS and the Express framework, or similar.
  • Must in all other ways be an expert practitioner of Web Application development principles and processes.
  • Must be adept and experienced in the use of the core markup and scripting languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Must have strong familiarity with Angular, Node, and various SQL databases.
  • Must have substantial coding skills using client-side JavaScript frameworks, server-side frameworks, APIs, and data stores.
  • Must be proficient with popular web development tools, libraries, and frameworks.
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have mastery of desktop and mobile platforms (Mac OS, Windows, iOS and Android) and connectivity services, and integrating equipment into classrooms and development sandboxes.
  • Must have an amicable character with the ability to be a self-starter and deliver on expectations.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, industry, staff and students.
  • Must possess an ability to learn and adapt rapidly to changes in the web development industry.
  • Willingness to travel to attend conferences and training - local, national and international.
  • May be required to teach day, evening, weekend, online, blended, or off-campus courses.

Preferred Qualifications:
Terminal Degree preferred.
Previous educational participation preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to teach in a classroom setting. Ability to see, hear, talk, stand, sit, walk and fine hand manipulation.
