Position Title: Graduate School, Research Associate


The Graduate School is continuing to grow resources to help central administrators as well as administrators at the program, department, and college level, make data-informed decisions about graduate studies. We have built a data warehouse focused on graduate education to support multiple goals, such as program review, annual review of trends, and new program proposals. While the University's Institutional Research group has ultimate responsibility for reporting official data and supporting data-informed decision-making by central administration, and this position will collaborate closely with the IR office, this position will serve the needs of the graduate school and graduate education partners. We also have a strong and growing partnership with leaders in the Chief Financial Officer's unit, and our groups continue to work together to provide complementary, coordinated perspectives on graduate education. The individual in this position will report directly to the dean of the graduate school and work collegially with our leadership team with a goal of improving data warehouse and analytics resources, as well as interactive dashboards and visualizations that empower campus decision makers, inform policy and practice, and tell the story of graduate education at Clemson.

Position Summary

This Research Associate will work within a collegial and collaborative graduate school leadership team to support multiple mission-critical functions, such as program review, accreditation needs, and data-informed decision-making. The person in this position will be responsible for developing, preparing, analyzing and presenting quantitative institutional information and for responding efficiently, completely, and even proactively to both internal and external data requirements/requests/needs. This position focuses generally on: (a) cohort-based analysis of graduate student retention and graduation rates, degree production, and student movement through course and degree pathways, and (b) cross-sectional, updated analyses of annual trends across the institution. This Research Associate will work closely Institutional Research, CFO, graduate programs, departments, colleges, student affairs, central administration, graduate school leadership, and other groups as needed to empower decisionmakers to make informed decisions on graduate student success and to develop factually based knowledge about graduate education at Clemson. This person must also be an innovator and leader, developing new initiatives and implementing best practices gleaned from peer institutions and professional organizations, as well as personal curiosity and experience, supporting the strategic goals of the Graduate School, and Clemson University. Finally, we expect this person to be a proactive member of the graduate education community, anticipating needs and making recommendations to leadership rather than merely responding to requests.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report and analyze graduate admissions, enrollment, degrees awarded, time to degree, and retention/persistence and graduation rates.
  • Conduct research to identify and understand the relative impact of factors on graduate retention, graduation, time to degree, and other measures of student success.
  • Design, develop, and generate queries and reports from University databases to support a variety of requirements relating to graduate education.
  • Collect, prepare, analyze and report data in response to both internal and external data requirements/requests.
  • Prepare cohort-based graduate student retention and graduation data tables in the database system and ensure that the inclusion and exclusion indicators in the data tables are accurate.
  • Practice data management to ensure data integrity, accuracy and consistency.
  • Assist with data preparation and analysis for leadership, including benchmarking internal data against external data sets where appropriate
  • Analyze demographic and academic performance data to support and inform graduate recruitment, admissions, retention, enrollment projections, and academic program planning decisions.
  • Collaborate with data analyst specialists in other offices throughout the University involved in graduate enrollment management research and analysis.
  • Monitor and evaluate institutional and student data to identify existing or potential problems and recommend constructive program and policy solutions across the graduate education enterprise.
  • Support internal data needs such as monitoring compliance with policies, support academic progress monitoring (probation mechanisms), and similar tasks.
  • Support and maintain the STYGTYP Banner table for graduate assistantships, fellowships, grants, and tuition data processes, reporting, analysis and oversight.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree and a minimum of 3 years' demonstrated work experience in a related discipline with credentials related to computer science, information systems, mathematics, statistics, or other quantitative related disciplines.
  • Ability to present complex data in a succinct, meaningful way to a variety of audiences.
  • Capability to build, manage, and query data warehouses
  • Experiences using statistical packages and data query tools
  • Ability to utilize Tableau and other visualization packages to prepare presentations and support reporting.
  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, responsiveness and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a related discipline with credentials related to information systems and quantitative data analysis.
  • Excellent technical knowledge developing queries and reports from relational databases.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain sound working relationships.
  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, responsiveness and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage concurrent projects in an environment filled with competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of higher education, particularly knowledge of graduate education in higher education.
Salary range for this position:$54,667 - $73,067
