Position Summary: This is a Laboratory Manager I position with the Serology/Virology section of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The primary duties will be to perform a variety of diagnostic tests for the detection of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and prions from animal tissues as well as general lab duties. The Laboratory Manager I will perform experiments, interpret results, consult with submitting veterinarians/pathologists, assist in maintaining proper quality assurance, and may supervise students and staff.

Responsibilities: Diagnostic Testing and Reporting: Perform a variety of diagnostic tests for the detection of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and prions from animal tissues. Work content will include: receiving/recording of samples; preparing samples for testing; culturing various cell lines for virus isolation and serum neutralization tests; performing a wide variety of diagnostic tests including but not limited to: ELISA, direct & indirect immunofluorescence, serum neutralization, latex agglutination, and agar gel immunodiffusion. Accurately recording/interpreting test results and preparing test reports for clients.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree and 4 years experience or equivalent combination required. Specialty certification may be required. Masters degree preferred Area-specific certification (i.e.; SCUBA) and training may be required. Other training will be provided as appropriate (i.e.; UGA HazMat training and/or Radiation Worker).
