The Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking an Executive Director for the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (Petit Institute), one of Georgia Tech's eleven Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs).  The Petit Institute’s mission is to promote innovative interdisciplinary activities and lead the establishment of new research initiatives at the interface of bioengineering and the biosciences. It serves as an “intellectual crossroads” for interdisciplinary and translational research across Georgia Tech’s six colleges and through strategic partnerships including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University School of Medicine, Georgia State University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the University of Georgia. It also administers interdisciplinary graduate academic programs in bioengineering, bioinformatics, and quantitative biosciences, and research experiences for undergraduates and high school students.  The Petit Institute’s mandate is to create and catalyze previously unimagined solutions to grand challenges in human health, biology, and other bioengineering-related fields. 

The Executive Director provides intellectual leadership to the organization while also maintaining oversight of the operations.  Directly impacting more than $70 million in annual research awards, the Petit Institute provides a 150,000 square foot physical home for over 35 faculty, and administrative infrastructure that currently supports 19 faculty-led research centers and more than 200 faculty members.  These faculty, who retain their “faculty home” in the Georgia Tech college and school of their primary academic appointment, conduct their research in facilities supported by and/or with services provided by the Petit Institute, including 16 state-of-the-art core facilities in two buildings.  As a service-oriented leader, the successful candidate must enable faculty and staff success through supportive partnerships with the academic units.  The incoming Executive Director will also enrich collaborations with industry and the applied research and economic development units of Georgia Tech, as part of an ongoing initiative to develop a vibrant life science innovation ecosystem.

The Executive Director will hold the Parker H. Petit Director’s Chair and have a primary tenured academic appointment in the appropriate Georgia Tech academic school.  In addition to an academic or industry leadership background and an outstanding national and international reputation, candidates should have an ambitious vision of how to lead the Petit Institute to the next level of success, a strong track record and passion for collaborative interdisciplinary research and training, and a clear commitment to mentoring young faculty members and students and working for “the greater good.”  The Executive Director will report to the Executive Vice President for Research and is expected to develop a forward-looking vision for bioengineering and bioscience that will enable Georgia Tech to strengthen its national leadership position in these areas.
