The University of Illinois invites applications and nominations for a full-time major gift officer position to secure private support for the Department of Computer Science (CS @ ILLINOIS). The Assistant Director/Associate Director/Director/Senior Director of Advancement will secure private support for funding priorities within the department as determined by the Department Head of CS and the Associate Dean for Advancement in the College of Engineering. This major gift officer will strengthen the connection of donors as valued members of the university and will help foster long-term philanthropic relationships for CS @ ILLINOIS.

CS @ ILLINOIS is one of the top-ranked computer science programs in the country and attracts the very best undergraduate and graduate students. With faculty conducting research in all areas of computer science, from systems and networking to artificial intelligence, and from graphics and human-computer interaction to database systems and information retrieval, CS @ ILLINOIS stands at the forefront of computing innovation in the 21st century. On October 13, 2017, the university launched its fourth comprehensive campaign. "With Illinois" is the most ambitious philanthropic initiative in its history. The goal is to raise $2.25 billion in support of Illinois students, faculty, research, and infrastructure and to continue to elevate the values that make Illinois distinctive: a sense of boundless aspiration, collaborative research, and global perspective. The College of Engineering has set a campaign goal to raise $550 million. Additionally, now through the end of 2019, The Grainger Foundation will match all donations made to the College's Engineering Visionary Scholarships Initiative, which supports endowed scholarships to make an Engineering education at Illinois accessible to the most-deserving and highest-achieving students.

Campaign fundraising priorities for CS @ ILLNOIS include the CS Visionary Scholarship Funds for undergraduates, graduate fellowships, endowed faculty chairs and professorships, sponsored research, K-12 outreach programs, and building the overall major gifts pipeline.

Primary Function

This position reports to the Department Head of CS and the Associate Dean for Advancement in the College of Engineering and will work closely with CS advancement colleagues, CS faculty and other college, campus, and University of Illinois Foundation staff to maximize identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies for major gift prospects. The primary responsibility of these major gifts officers is to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects capable of making gifts of $25,000 or more in support of the Department of Computer Science.

Duties and Responsibilities

Identify, assess, analyze, and design appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and donors and making the vitally important match between donors' philanthropic interests and the department's programmatic and curricular needs.

Work closely with CS faculty and staff to gain a strong knowledge of the academic and research programs in order to communicate the benefits of these programs and to identify and define priorities to be funded through private support.

Plan and implement effective outreach and cultivation activities to enhance prospect identification and move solicitation and stewardship processes forward. Prepare faculty and other volunteers to participate in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts as needed.

Proactively manage a portfolio of up to 120 individual major gift prospects and donors (with an emphasis on gifts of $100,000 and more), determining frequency of contact needed.

Use the university donor database for statistical and subjective analysis in determining and prioritizing lists of donor prospects, alumni and other stakeholders to be contacted for personal visits.

Maintain a travel schedule of 30 - 50% time including some evenings and weekends.

Use independent judgment to determine appropriate use of resources for travel to priority destinations nationally to meet with alumni, friends, corporations and foundations for the purpose of building relationships leading to financial support of the University.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills and experience working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • A minimum of two years of successful advancement experience or experience in a related field (such as sales, marketing, communications, financial planning etc.) is required for Assistant Director.
  • For the title of Associate Director, a minimum of three years of successful advancement experience or more than six years of related work experience (such as sales, marketing, communications, financial planning, etc.). For the title of Director, a minimum of five years of successful advancement experience or ten years of strongly related work experience (such as sales, marketing, communications, financial planning, etc.). For the title of Senior Director, a minimum of seven years of successful advancement experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent an organization in visits with key constituents
  • Understanding of major donor prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Strong relationship management skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Documented success as a major and principal gift fundraiser in higher education
  • Knowledge of advancement strategies including best practices related to development at institutions of higher education
  • Advancement experience in a leading science or engineering academic unit that produces degrees and conducts rigorous academic research
  • Previous experience working with faculty leaders and understanding and communicating the benefits of innovative scientific or technical research
  • Experience utilizing alumni and/or student programs and devising innovative ones to engage alumni and/or donors to support academic priorities
