Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge through original and innovative research, instruction, and outreach. The department balances an interdependence of formal classroom instruction with laboratory instruction and experience in research methods. The department promotes a culture for developing interdisciplinary teams that are recognized for solving local, state, and global grand challenges, including teaching and research into the elucidation of basic processes in plants, animals, and microbes and the experimental manipulation of these processes to understand their underlying mechanisms. Classroom instruction and laboratory research incorporate a variety of model organisms to examine all levels of biological organization, including molecular, biochemical, biophysical, structural, and organismal.
Essential Job Duties: The Business Services Coordinator position serves as a staff/management assistant to the Department Head and a key administrative liaison between the department, college and university. The position coordinates business functions including HR personnel actions and financial management. Primary duties include but are not limited to: * Coordinate and provide support to the department head in all aspects of the HR lifecycle (recruitment, hiring, evaluation processes, promotion/RPT initiation, separation) functions involving EHRA and SHRA personnel based on feedback and needs of faculty. * Responsible for the input, follow-through, and troubleshooting of Human Resources processes to ensure timely completion and compliance with regulations and human resources policies. * Manage all financial activities in the department and serve as the primary liaison with CALS Business Office, ensuring all business actions are appropriate and in compliance with University and College policies. * Develop and monitor departmental budget. Ensure that accounts are correct and accurate budgets are uploaded by the college. Ensure that all commitments are fulfilled and are provided in the appropriate accounts. This position will make recommendations and advise the Department Head on all business and financial matters including appropriate expenditures for the diverse accounts in the department, including academic, DE, research, extension, and foundation accounts. * Interpret and effectively communicate information (data, interpretation of data, solutions to issues) to departmental faculty and staff, CALS Business Center and Personnel Office and University offices.
Department Required Skills: * Knowledge (and willingness to obtain knowledge) of federal, state, university, and departmental rules and regulations involving HR, Financial, and Travel. * Experience with PeopleSoft HR, Financials and Student Services Systems (or similar software). * Demonstrated skills with handling various computer programs (such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Calendar and Gmail). * Ability to manage budgets and demonstrate mathematical skills. * Ability to work well with faculty, staff, students, and other constituents. * Ability to identify and understand issues, problems, and opportunities; determine course of action; develop appropriate solutions. * Exceptional ability to write and communicate in various formats and styles. * Ability to multi-task and complete multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration or related discipline and at least one year of office administration and human resources experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
