Primary Function of Organization Unit: The main purpose of Prestage Department of Poultry Science is to support the North Carolina poultry industry through research, teaching and extension activities. Poultry is the largest income-producing commodity in the state and the Prestage Department of Poultry Science works hand-in-hand with different producers, commodity organizations, allied industries, and other state agencies in educating and distributing information gleaned research and extension activities at the university level. The Department conducts research and extension projects in physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, nutrition, toxicology, genetics, and management with the ultimate goal to improve the production and wholesomeness of poultry as a food product.
Essential Job Duties: This position requires development of programs focused on improving the safety of poultry meat and eggs, and provide microbiological and food safety support for the poultry processing industry. The effort percentages relative to this faculty position's focus will be split 60% Extension; 30% Research; 10% Teaching. The candidate is expected to work with other processing faculty in the college to plan, develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to food safety and food processing aspects associated with poultry meat and eggs. These courses will be a part of the portfolio of courses that fulfill the requirements of a proposed Minor in Meat Science. The new faculty member is expected to seek funds from federal granting agencies as well as industry sponsored research. Minimum Education/Experience: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in food-related microbiology and processing or a closely related field.
Department Required Skills: Applicants must have food-related microbial research experience and a record of research/teaching accomplishments.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Individuals trained in microbiology, food safety, and food processing/extension are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and outreach in the area of processing and post-harvest food safety, and teach classes focused on preparing students for industry leadership in poultry meat /egg processing including food safety. A pilot poultry meat and egg processing plant is available for conducting applied research and training students.
