Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge through original and innovative research, instruction, and outreach. The department balances an interdependence of formal classroom instruction with laboratory instruction and experience in research methods. The laboratory is located in Polk Hall, in the heart of the NC State north campus, which houses the Department.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Assistant will perform molecular biology techniques; transform and culture bacteria for protein production; perform routine culture, transfection, maintenance and assay of human cell lines. The incumbent will perform experiments involving PCR, preparation of DNA and RNA, aseptic technique, protein purification and western blot analysis. The incumbent will also assist with protein crystallization screening and optimization, as well as assist with the day-to-day management of the research laboratory operations including supervising students, ensuring compliance with chemical and biosafety regulations and ordering supplies and reagents. Attendance at regularly scheduled lab meetings is expected.
Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree in Biochemistry or related field; or Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry or related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.
