Georgetown University invites inquiries, nominations and expressions of interest for the Endowed Chair and Director of the Georgetown Environment Initiative (GEI). Established by Georgetown through a generous anonymous gift, GEI brings together faculty, students and staff to advance interdisciplinary research and education that address the complex global challenges we face as stewards of the Earth system and its natural resources.
Reporting to Georgetown’s Provost, the GEI Endowed Chair and Director will lead an intellectual community of scholars spanning the science-policy interface, including business, law, health, social sciences, humanities and arts. The ideal Endowed Chair and Director will be a world-class scholar-educator in an environment-related discipline with a strong scientific or technical background who possesses a vibrant research agenda, significant understanding of environmental policy and demonstrated leadership in building collaborations and attracting external funding, including philanthropy. The specific disciplinary background is open, but successful candidates must possess a record of excellence in research, teaching and administration that bear on complex issues of the environment and that merit appointment as a tenured full professor. We seek individuals with demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary research programs through successful faculty collaborations, effective management of a diverse staff and stakeholders, and the pursuit of strategic opportunities to produce meaningful results and impact. The GEI Endowed Chair and Director will have a unique opportunity to build an internationally recognized environmental program that leverages the university’s strong cross-disciplinary expertise, global collaborations and strategic location in the nation’s capital, providing proximity to policy makers, funding agencies and philanthropic foundations. The Endowed Chair and Director will establish and implement a shared strategic vision to further the university’s interdisciplinary environmental scholarship and education. Creating meaningful collaborations, the Endowed Chair and Director will work with campus leaders to recruit and support distinguished faculty members and build new cross-campus academic programs, particularly with the Georgetown College, the School of Foreign Service, the McCourt School of Public Policy, the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown Law and the Georgetown University Medical Center. The Endowed Chair and Director will help develop resources and bring greater recognition to GEI through external engagement with partners, funding agencies, friends of the university and philanthropic foundations. As a senior faculty leader, the Endowed Chair and Director will directly contribute to Georgetown’s environmental scholarship and prepare Georgetown students to engage with the world’s environmental challenges from multiple perspectives.
