Chief Development Officer
Founded in 1807 as “a fountain, at which all, who choose, may gratify their thirst for knowledge,” the Boston Athenæum has grown from a small literary club into one of the world’s great private libraries. Named for a site of learned discourse in ancient Greece, the Athenæum remains at heart a community of curious thinkers, with an intentionally expansive mission. Today, in addition to its core identity as an active circulating library for its several thousand members, the Athenæum also serves as a cultural center, research archive, and exhibition venue. To deepen the organization’s impact and position it for a future every bit as vital as its past, the Athenæum seeks a Chief Development Officer to grow its program of generating philanthropic support for this extraordinary cultural icon.
Reporting to the Athenæum’s Stanford Calderwood Director, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will help facilitate and foster a culture of philanthropy that assures fundraising success and strategically advances the Athenæum’s mission, all while subscribing to the highest professional standards of prospect cultivation, gift stewardship and staff management. The CDO will be a member of a collaborative leadership team and will be expected to contribute to making institutional decisions, setting priorities, reviewing plans, and developing policies and practices, in accordance with the Athenæum’s strategic plan. The CDO will work closely with the Athenæum’s Director and Board of Trustees in setting institution-wide fundraising strategies and priorities that will help to realize the collective vision for the future of the Athenæum.
The CDO will have overall leadership responsibility for institutional advancement through the management of a portfolio that encompasses all development program areas: annual programs, leadership gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, stewardship and events, and development operations. It is expected that the CDO will maintain and foster relationships with key donors and prospects.
The CDO will join the Athenæum during a period of renewal and growth, following the adoption of a Development Growth Plan intended to support the organization’s Strategic Goals. The CDO’s activities and responsibilities are designed to build the Athenæum’s development program toward a multi-year, comprehensive fundraising campaign at some point in the future. The CDO will be the principal architect and director of all development activities. This will require strong coordination with multiple Athenæum departments, including especially with marketing and communication colleagues to ensure the Athenæum’s messages are aligned with the institution’s overall communications strategy.
The Boston Athenæum’s Chief Development Officer will have an opportunity to play a key role in the evolution to national prominence of this cultural cornerstone of one of America’s greatest and most historic cities. A full position description can be found here: www.wittkieffer.com.
