Senior Writer/Editor for Advancement Communications
The University Relations department at Bryant University seeks an energetic and flexible Senior Writer/Editor for Advancement Communications. This position reports to the Director of Editorial Services and is a member of an editorial group responsible for developing and implementing Bryant University brand messaging. The successful candidate will join a fast-paced, hands-on team that produces effective, high-quality work highlighting Bryant’s strengths and illustrating its brand marketing themes. The Senior Writer/Editor works closely with the Director and with the Associate Vice President for University Relations as well as the Executive Director of Development and the Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement to develop strategies and communication vehicles that achieve Bryant’s goals of showcasing and inspiring philanthropy. JOB SCOPE: WRITING/MANAGING PRODUCTION (40%): As a member of the University Relations team, the Senior Writer/Editor for Advancement Communications must be familiar with design conception and all phases of communication project implementation, from concept to completion and distribution. The Senior Writer/Editor: • collaborates with colleagues to develop story ideas and content strategies and to conceive, research, and write engaging and accurate communications suited to the needs of specific audiences and situations, on deadline; • is responsible for researching, writing and editing compelling content for multiple mediums, including print, web, social, digital, and advertising that aligns with the University’s strategic positioning goals and fund-raising objectives; • rewrites drafts as necessary utilizing creativity and proven skills in analysis and problem solving combined with the ability to evaluate, synthesize, and incorporate feedback from multiple stakeholders; • should possess sophisticated visual sensibilities and the ability to effectively prioritize and execute multiple concurrent projects to develop and coordinate a heavy volume of content required to meet project timelines; • And serves as the primary point of contact with external vendors, including graphic designers, photographers, freelance writers, and printers. INTERVIEWING/REPORTING (20%): Research and interview alumni, donors, faculty members, administrators, students and other relevant sources and attend significant events/programs to tell stories in a way that resonates with others and simultaneously builds goodwill toward the University. EDITING (15%): In a fast-moving collegial environment characterized by tight deadlines, the Senior Writer/Editor will help to edit content produced by department colleagues and freelance writers to ensure coherence, style, accuracy, grammatical correctness, and adherence to University brand and editorial guidelines. This includes content editing, copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking. PLANNING AND STRATEGY (15%): Function as an active participant of a high-performing team. Collaborate in the creation and ongoing refinement of editorial strategies to support University and fundraising goals and objectives. Maintain awareness of current research about alumni audience preferences and needs as well as issues in higher education that would impact or resonate with alumni, friends. PERFORM RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED (5%) The successful candidate for this position will have a minimum of an undergraduate degree (communication, English, journalism, marketing or a related field preferred) and 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience – ideally including at least two years in higher education -writing and editing compelling, crisp marketing copy and/or branded journalism on topics and themes that support an institutional communication strategy. Direct experience in writing to support fundraising and development initiatives is preferred. The Senior Writer/Editor should be a strategic thinker, an excellent planner with a highly disciplined work ethic, and possess the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently _ and meet deadlines_ in a complex environment. Strong interpersonal, writing, and communication skills are imperative to successfully interact with internal and external constituencies to produce content that meets strategic and persuasive marketing objectives. Some travel to interview subjects or attend special programs is required. The Senior Writer/Editor will be expected to work some evenings and weekend hours.
