General Summary:

This classification requires a highly skilled individual with expertise in all aspects of tax compliance. Must be well versed in IRS regulations and can clearly communicate such regulations including, but not limited to, Tax Exempt Bond Compliance, Foreign Tax Compliance, Unrelated Business Income Tax, Sales and Use Tax, and Employee Taxation.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Ensure proper preparation and timely submission of tax returns. Provide tax consultations with management, directors and department heads. Develop and distribute university-wide tax guidance. Develop and recommend changes to policies and procedures to strengthen compliance with applicable laws. Maintain current knowledge of tax issues affecting higher education institutions. Act as Eastern Michigan University's representative at various professional affiliated groups.Correspond with IRS representatives as needed. Implement changes to improve productivity and increase efficiency. Evaluate present operational and business process systems and recommend changes. Perform liaison functions with other departments. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.Four years' experience in tax accounting, including preparation of various tax forms, is required. Experience in all forms of employer related tax issues is required.Considerable knowledge of tax laws, rules and regulations is required. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively implement quality improvement initiatives is required. Effective written, and oral communication skills is required. Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, responsibility, and self-motivation is required. Demonstrated ability to be flexible in managing a workload of varied tasks is required. Proven ability to work independently under pressure and with minimal supervision is required. Good organizational skills are required. Proven ability as a team leader and to work collaboratively on teams is required. Proficiency with personal computers, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word is required.Experience working in a nonprofit environment is desired.
