General Statement:

College of San Mateo (CSM) has an outstanding business and management program which offers many pathways to academic and career success. Our specialties include: entrepreneurship, small business management, human resources, and marketing. CSM offers an array of certificates, including a nationally-recognized entrepreneurship certificate, career technical education certificates such as business information worker and facilities management, and Associate degrees in business administration and management. The business department cooperates with the on-campus Small Business Development Center, the Business Club, and hosts competitions and events.

SMCCCD faculty members are expected to be knowledgeable about and willing to use, different learning and teaching methods as appropriate to the discipline.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in business, business management, business administration, accountancy, finance, marketing or business education OR a Bachelor’s degree in one of the above AND a Master’s degree in economics, personnel management, public administration, or JD or LL.B degree OR a Bachelor’s degree in economics with a business emphasis AND a Master’s degree in personnel management, public administration, or JD or LL.B degree OR the equivalent (see below)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Subject matter preparation:

Preference will be given to candidates who:
1. Have recent successful experience teaching college-level courses, such as Introduction to Business, Business Law, International Business, Business Information Systems, Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, Entrepreneurial Mindset, Sources of Financing, Human Relations in Business, Business Communication, Management, Marketing, and Business Math
2. Are well qualified to teach all courses in the CSM college catalogue in the Business and Management programs
3. Have experience in teaching lower-division transfer courses in business within the last five years
4. Have professional work experience in the field of business, including demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication

Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:

Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:
5. A commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in business and in collaborating with industry and/or professional organizations on curriculum and partnership development
6. The ability to continuously evaluate and improve teaching methods
7. The ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students’ abilities and learning styles
8. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners
9. The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity
10. The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds
11. The ability to develop student learning outcomes and to develop methods for assessing students’ achievement of those outcomes
12. The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
13. Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in business education, including online instruction
14. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:

15. The ability, initiative, and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the spirit of collegiality and innovation to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
16. Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities
