FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of Political Science and Global Affairs at the College of Staten Island, a senior college of the City University of New York, seeks candidates for a tenure track Geography position at the Assistant Professor level, with an anticipated start date of September 2018. We seek a broadly trained Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist. Specialization in Urban, Population, or Environmental Geography that incorporate GIS applications is preferred (although we will consider any Human Geography subfield).
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a City University of New York (CUNY) senior college organized around two academic divisions and three schools, with over 14,000 students. CSI offers a broad range of academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and in several professional areas. The College awards associate's, bachelor's, master's and clinical doctoral degrees, and in collaboration with The CUNY Graduate Center, numerous PhD degrees. CSI's internationally recognized faculty passionately engage in scholarly and artistic activities, and together with a strong professional staff, lead students through transformational learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. The College is situated on a 204-acre site, has recently incorporated a residential component, and is currently engaging in capital expansion. It is a hub of intellectual and artistic activity and a community partner and source of economic impact and job creation for the greater Staten Island area. We serve a diverse student population from all five NYC boroughs. The college has a shuttle service to and from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and is also accessible from Manhattan and Brooklyn via MTA express and limited stop buses. CSI is also home to the CUNY High Performance Computing Center and outstanding computational assets are available for research purposes, including a broad portfolio of statistical tools and social science data resources. The school's location in New York City enables it to draw on the vast economic and cultural resources of the city. It also provides opportunities for faculty to interact with practitioners in industry and with researchers at other colleges and universities in the metropolitan area. Opportunities often exist to serve on the Doctoral Faculty of The City University of New York Graduate School in various field areas.

A Ph.D. degree in Geography or a closely related field is required at time of appointment. We seek a geographer with research skills, a strong teaching record with an ability to communicate geography to a diverse student body, and the ability to recruit students to geography. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory and intermediate GIS, introductory Geography courses which fulfill General Education requirements, and upper division courses in area of specialization; develop advanced GIS courses; support the university's interdisciplinary priorities; actively publish research; and perform departmental and college service. This position will help strengthen the recently-established Geography major.
