FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of World Languages and Literatures at the College of Staten Island of The City University of New York invites applications for a full-time lecturer in French position beginning in August 2018. The successful candidate will be a career educator who will teach all levels of French language, develop French language and culture curriculum, coordinate multi-section language courses, and will take a leading role in recruitment, advisement, program development, the French Program’s extracurricular events and community building. Desired areas of expertise include French for Heritage Speakers, Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics.

GENERAL DUTIES
Full-time lecturers are expected to perform the following duties: 
-Fulfill teaching and administrative duties equivalent to 27 hours per academic year
-Coordinate multi-section language courses
-Serve on relevant departmental and college-wide committees
-Participate in faculty development opportunities
-Advise students

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a City University of New York (CUNY) senior College organized around two academic divisions and three schools, with over 14,000 students. CSI offers a broad range of academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and in several professional areas. The College awards associate's, bachelor's, master's and clinical doctoral degrees, and in collaboration with The CUNY Graduate Center, numerous PhD degrees. CSI's internationally recognized faculty passionately engage in scholarly and artistic activities, and together with a strong professional staff, lead students through transformational learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. The College is situated on a 204-acre site, has recently incorporated a residential component, and is currently engaging in capital expansion. It is a hub of intellectual and artistic activity and a community partner and source of economic impact and job creation for the greater Staten Island area.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
A Ph.D. degree in French is preferred at time of appointment. Candidates with a Master’s degree in French with a minimum of five years of teaching experience at the college level will also be considered. Candidates should demonstrate native/near-native fluency in English and French, established competence in foreign language pedagogy as well as knowledge of current SLA research, including computer-assisted instruction. The candidate should be able to demonstrate concrete experience in innovative and effective teaching from beginning to advanced language classes that also emphasize Francophone culture. The successful candidate will assume a leading role in maintaining a strong French language curriculum and program. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to performing department and college service. Responsibilities include teaching French at all levels, advising and recruiting students to the program, and developing curriculum for heritage speakers. Current students of French at CSI are a majority women and almost 75% minority, many of them heritage speakers from Haiti, West Africa and the Maghreb. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience working with students of these backgrounds.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with heritage speakers of French is highly desirable, as well as experience coordinating and developing multi-section language courses.
